Our living room needs redecorating and carpet needs replaced and I am trying to plan ahead for when a wheelchair is required. Do wheelchairs move easily on short weaved carpets or should I go for laminated flooring? Your advice is appreciated.
Many thanks, Nanny 857.

Nanny857 we have got Woden floor, so much easier to clean than carpets, coming in with dirt on the wheels will destroy your carpet, I would recommend Woden floor 🌝
Thanks Yvonne, I must have gone brain dead as I hadn't thought of dirt, just manoeuvring wheelchair over carpet. How is George, it's hard to believe it's a week from his birthday garden party. Hope you have recovered. Lots of love, Nanny857 xx
George is going into hospital in the morning to have a super pubic catheter, and to inject Botox into his bladder, I am feeling a bit worried, he has been very quite even the dog has been quite, have to go into London so up early for 11 o'clock appointment, he is staying in over night, so have a lot of driving to do in the next few days. Yes wooden floors are the best, yes the part seems ages ago, but lucky it was not today, with this horrible weather. Choose you both are keeping ok love Yvonne xxxxx
Hi Yvonne, sorry only getting back to reply now. I hope you and George weren't kept waiting too long. Hope he is settled for the night and everything goes well.
We are doing fine. W is now finding the bright days are affecting his eyes, so I got him new sunglasses with wide sides which he says are helping. New speech therapist calling with us tomorrow morning. I'm meeting an old friend for lunch on Thursday so looking forward to that.
Thanks Satt2015, looks like it will be laminate in living room, hallway and bedroom too. Mmmm I wonder are there any grants for all this upheaval and extra costs 🤔🤔🤔🤔 (only joking). Hope you are well. xx
Yes grants are available but will be means tested, talk to your social worker/OT they will be able to tell you. As it is for aiding disabled use within the home it may be VAT free again discuss with them.
Also check out your bathroom may be worth converting to a wet room again with appropriate flooring.
We've got wooden floors with some (big) rugs throughout - just replaced carpet in my dad's downstairs bedroom with vinyl - too many accidents. Had been thinking about laminate but that was too complicated.
We have a thick vinyl from the dining room through to the kitchen. It's great for spills and has a warmer feel than laminate as it is softer for walking , (or for falling! ) on. It will not have the same life span as laminate flooring but it suits us and is not as disruptive to lay and is possibly cheaper. We have a short pile carpet in the living room which a wheelchair can easily move over. Good luck! X
We have laminate and flat pile rugs throughout with underfloor heating.I would never manage with carpets because of muddy or wet wheelchair and spills but in the bedroom we have a vinyl plank, which is fitted just like laminate but is waterproof. It can even be used in a bathroom or kitchen, which is where I will lay it next.Laminate is just wipeable. The vinyl we have in the bedroom, is a beautiful white-washed wood effect and is warmer underfoot, so no need for underfloor heating. I think it is called Tega, or Tiga and I bought it from Carpet Right. It is sealed around the edges and has taken many a bowl over turned, filled with soapy water!!!
Hi my sister en law had new carpet put in about a year ago, I tried to. tell her to put laminate wood in but she said if my brother fell she was afraid he would get hurt, now have can hardly walk and she has a very hard time pushing the transfer chair on the carpet, I have wood flooring and don't have a problem with the transfer chair and brother, so yes get laminate flooring you will be happy so easy to keep clean. Nettie
Thanks Nettie. Carpet is definitely out. We have laminate flooring in dining room, so will probably go for same in living room and hallway. Also going to look at DenB's suggestion of vinyl for bedroom. Nanny857 xx
