Can anyone tell me the difference between comfort feeding and the Liverpool care pathway or is there a difference?

Thanks Shasha Rose is at risk with her swallow and the nursing home have decided to comfort feed that is just offer her well blended soft food when she is well alert, but I have heard of the lcp in end of life care and they withdraw food so wondered if it was much the same thing.

They have fazed it out now because they was putting to many people on it without consent from relatives and as I said if they was not ready they did linger. And some relatives got distressed when there loved ones were asking for drink and food And the staff said food and drink had been stopped.that was when they found out they was on the liverpool. Yes they did withdraw fluid as well that way it incourages the body to start shutting down. The body will shut down naturally and you will know because they will stop eating and then drinking. I am glad they stopped the liverpool because it seemed that as much as they said it was death with dignity I was convinced it was inhumane and it felt like forceing death. Get rid of the old and inferm. When the body is ready the person normally stops eating and drinking naturally and as long as they are kept comfortable it is more dignified no struggle. As you can tell I hate the thought of it. Janexx

Liverpool is withdrawal of food and drink it takes up to a week for the body to shut down then it could be a few more days before death occurs. Its like fast track to death and if the person is not really at that stage yet it can take longer. Hope thats not to graphic for you. Comfort feeding is a more humain method because it gives the body chance to decline at a more natural rate. And I have seen both and I know what I will be doing for Brian. Janexx

Great explanation! Thank you Rose is being comfort fed, sorry to ask you this does that mean her body will be shutting down now? I am not upset about that I don't want her to suffer anymore.

Her body might be thinking about it. But all the time she is having something to eat she is not 100% ready. They normally stop eating completely but will still take fluids then once they stop taking fluids as well that normally signals the is in shut down mode. Janexx

Liverpool care pathway is when food drink n meds r stopped but it is no longer practiced.

Ive been told by the specialists that at the end the sufferer will decline eating and drinking and that is the sign that the end is near. My mum is being risk fed at the moment so although she is at the latter stages she has a good apetite..
