Are teeth affected by ADT or Xtandi?
I believe there is a direct correlation based on my personal experience. I've been on Orgovyx for about 28 months and over the course of that time three of my teeth cracked and needed serious dental work. I've also been on Prolia and that may have contributed as well.
Good luck!
You take prolia how often ?
I was receiving an injection every six months and actually received the dosage two times before discontinuing and I no longer have any dental issues.
Thanks. Do you have osteoporosis.
I do, but I'm heavy into Vit D and Calcium to offset and so far I've done very well after ceasing Prolia.
You take calcium supplements ? Are you calcium serum levels ok . Allen says not to take calcium supplements if serum levels are ok
Just had bloodwork done. It’s 9.7, normal with taking citrical. However, just to note, I’ve had a gastric sleeve surgery and only consume about 1400 calories a day now. Surgeon recommended calcium along with bariatric vitamins.
My doc is good with my taking the supplements and says not to change anything because my numbers look strong. I've found that the 'experts' aren't always correct and I've learned to listen to my body and how it's reacting. Good luck to you on your journey!
Thanks. How much calcium and vitamin D do you tak e
Vitamin D- 5000 IU's via supplement, plus food sources plus..
Calcium- I take Citracalt hat provides 650 Mg's of calcium and 1100 iIU'ss of vit D3
Forgot to mention, I also do extensive resistance training and running/walking daily). It requires effort, but despite having advanced Prostate cancer for the past 3 years, I have minimal side effects and feel great!
I had the same experience, teeth became sensitive and ached. MO denied there was a link but I thought it strange it hadn’t happened prior to or since ADT. I used a prescription fluoride toothpaste and rinse daily for a few weeks and it helped quite a bit.
Though there was no link when 3 of my teeth chipped after about 15 months on ADT but after reading you guys, maybe there is a link. Teeth are basically bones, right? Maybe they lose some density too?
I have had strange things going on in my mouth since starting ADT, so I am pleased some others are sharing their experiences here.
I have all my wisdom teeth apart from one that is partially through and has never caused me a lot of pain or been a problem in 20 years of it trying to fully erupt. Always keep it clean and have regular check-ups.
But 3 months into Lupron it has become a nightmare with a lot of pain and bleeding on and off. It settles for a while and then starts all over again. Plus I have tenderness sometimes in my upper gums and mouth.
Another thing I have noticed is a dryness inside my nose with occasional soreness there too. ADT has also depleted my white blood cell count so that I have got Neutropenia. I questioned my consultants about this and they confirmed it was a side effect of Lupron.
Their response "try and avoid anyone who is ill or unwell". Glad to see the NHS service here is as much in the dark about unlisted side effects of the medication/treatment they are advocating......
My ADT finished 4 weeks ago but I am still firmly entrenched in Lupron City, with the side effects to be honest worse rather than better, just hope they improve over time.
Research suggests anything from 3-6 months or even longer. Joy!
We plod on!
ADT has a strong association with periodontal disease:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
It can also cause dry mouth, which favors development of caries.
As with many of parts of the body, ADT is most unkind. Being especially fastidious about your oral hygiene is a must, even if no guarantee of protection. Plenty of exercise is critical also.
18 months of Lupron - no teeth issues
Many years on Lupron............many side effects........but my bite is worse than my bark.......
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

I was OK with a six month eligard ADT shot. More recently my urologist put me on finasteride. That caused very troublesome, painfully sensitive teeth top and bottom on one side. We are talking pain when breathing in chilly (not cold, I'm in Phoenix) evening air in the 'winter'. Was switched to the very similar dutasteride and so far my teeth are fine with that.
I'll just comment - after 18 months of Lupron - I had two teeth extractions due to cracked teeth. Just as your bones can become fragile due to loss of calcium, so can your teeth.
A calcium supplement may (no promises) help avoid or lessen some of the issues.
It should be noted - I'm closing in on the 8th decade, and I grew up in an era when a visit to the dentist was only done when there was a raging infection in a tooth - which was always pulled. When I started work my dental treatment became a bit better, but still had many fillings done, root canals, posts, crowns, etc... a child of the 50's mouth when they get older isn't a nice thing.
That said - I think it's still worthwhile talking to your medical oncologist about what can be done to help avoid dental losses.. and consider these don't stop because you're done with the treatments - the damage is already done (leaching of calcium) and the teeth are already weakened.
thank you
After a bit more time, what I’ve found is that it’s not so much my teeth as it is my jawbone. After decades of being silent, my TMJ has come back, which I think is a result of the Xtandi. I’ve been taking citrical to improve my calcium levels.
