6 weeks post RP, Penile Pain at night if Bladder gets too full.

I was wandering if anyone else has had this happen to them. I am 48 years old and surgery went better than expected. Organ contained, negative margins, urinary continent 99% since catheter removal, great erections with viagra and cialis.

My main concern is that if I let my bladder get too full at night, I wake up with extreme pain at the end of my penis. Can’t hardly walk to get to the bathroom, but once I empty my bladder pain goes away completely. There is some lingering tendernous for a couple hours, but not painful. I have been setting an alarm every 2-2 1/2 hours so my bladder does not get too full and then I have no issues. When I try to extend the time out longer - I wake up with lots of pain. Any advise or ideas as to what is going on.

I've heard about penile pain soon after RP from a few guys. Sometimes the pudendal nerve takes a beating during RP. It probably is pressed on by your full bladder. Usually, the nerve gets less sensitive over time, and the pain resolves on its own. Something like Neurontin can deaden the pain if it is really bad

Thanks TA, I will do some research on the pudendal nerve theory. I have also had pain in my tailbone when sitting on hard bleachers, plane seats or long drives. I lost 45 lbs getting prepared for surgery and recovery and figured I just had less padding that was causing the pain, it may all be related.

I had significant pain when sitting after surgery. It faded away after 4 weeks.

I had that. First time I got really panicky, it was agony, I didnt realise it was just my bladder was full, but it does fade over time. I read that it is.somehow due to nerves getting their wires crossed after surgery. Seemingly that does happen and occasionally you get the result you described. You should still check back with the doctors of course

I experienced similar pain which essentially had the effect of signaling an acute urgency and need to urinate. It mostly happened at night and was quite intense for the first 3 months or so post RP. Since then it's faded away into the background. Tall Allen's comment concerning the possible implication of the pudendal nerve sounds about right.

HannityThis is off topic of your post, but what regimen of Viagra & Cialis are you using, if you don't mind sharing. My husband is 9 weeks post RP and Viagra has had limited helpfulness for him. He had nerve sparing surgery but a + margin.

BWeaver - I typed up a response earlier today - but do not see it now so I will repost.

I started out with 5 mg of Cialis/day and it really didn't do much the first couple weeks. After that I increased to 10 mg of Cialis/day - this helped but still not quite there. Then at 4 weeks, 2 times/week I take 100 mg of Viagra and skip the Cialis on those days. With the 100 mg of Viagra, everything works as good as before surgery. (dry orgasms is the only exception obviously). Penile Rehab was a focus from the day the catheter was removed. On just the 10 mg of Cialis, I can get an erection and orgasm, just not a sustained erection (or enough confidence) for intercourse.

Hope this information helps. It makes me uncomfortable to discuss these things, but I know a lot of us with PC are dealing with the same things. I appreciate everyone's comments because it helps to know what others have experienced.

I remember that pain well. It faded with time. It helps to stop drinking a few hours before bedtime.

Have you ever considered "priapism"

getting out of hand or

two veins fused causing the pain.

Are you using a pump? You need to use a pump to keep the penis stretched out. I stopped using mine and now sometimes have pain. Also, incontinence, and pain when sitting are usually from pelvic floor disfunction.

I am eight months post RP and can't get an erection, have to wear diapers due to incontinence. I have an appointment next month at USF in Tampa for consultation on bladder sling vs prosthetic sphincter.
