Gene therapy
This form of treatment is very new and uses genes to treat diseases.
A harmless virus will be injected into the macula. This will carry a gene into the eye cells which codes for a drug, like Lucentis or Eylea. This enables us to create a ‘drug factory’, as the eye can use the gene to make the drug itself, taking away the need for injections.
There are early phase clinical trials underway using gene therapy for both wet (in the USA) and dry AMD (in the UK).
