Can anyone tell me what the treatment is for SPD? I'm having problems with my lower back hips and pelvis low down at the front. It's killing me an I could barely walk by the end of the day. I'm nearly 27 weeks so still have a way to go and I'm a bit worked about it getting worse as I'm still working and I have a toddler to run around after too! Would my midwife refer me to an obstetric physio? Thanks

What is the treatment for spd?
oh bless u I had it mildly but my friend had it really badly, she couldn't work, they weren't very helpful, think there are some support belts u can get..the midwife should be able to help otherwise online, if u google maternity support belts it should bring some up, and u need to talk to your midwife about the birth...obviously opening ur legs is very painful, you could try physio or look into if an osteopath could help that would be private thou, but we'll worth it if they could help, u have to take it easy the weight of ur tummy and the baby getting bigger puts more pressure....oh I do feel for you xx
Hello, I am 25 weeks, and have been diagnosed with pelvic girdle pain. My midwife referred me as soon as I described my symptoms, to the local nhs physio clinic and I had an appointment in under 2 week's. It was a group session with other ladies suffering with the condition, it was 2 hours and really informative. Also, as I attended, I now have an open referral to physio until 3 week's after baby is born and can book an appointment at any time. In terms of tips, the nhs website in good and there is a link to the pelvic partnership website. From my session, tips included not sitting or standing for over about an hour at a time, using correct posture and a rolled up towel in the small of your back, no doing anything that involves twisting or lifting, i.e hoovering, mopping, grocery shopping, etc. Whilst driving never climb in, put a plastic bag on the seat, sit down on to it and swivel in, your clutch leg should remain bent at all times and towel behind you. They gave us support bands too. Erm.... basically dont do anything where you separate your legs at all, keept together when getting in and out of car, bed, sex.... Etc. Lol. Same for labour! There is so much and the tips do help.
Hope you feel better, following there advice really helps
Hi! I got pgp from around 14 weeks really badly, its caused by the hormone relaxin and when its at its peak can cause severe discomfort and pain, I told my midwife and was referred immediately for physio, the hospital rang me the very next day which I was very suprised by and I was seen within a week! I would advise not to spend money on a support belt until you have been to a physio as I found out that pressure of being pulled in and lifted made it worse for me, and I needed to do a series of exercises, onlly very light ones with minor movements but highly effective! Get onto your midwife and get referred! If your midwife is not so helpful then keep pushing for it as going untreated will leave you very unhappy and in a lot of pain! Hope this helps you good luck and take care! Xx
Oh ps my symptoms subsided after the levels of relaxin went down and I did my exercises! Xx
I had spd really badly in my first pregnancy and at the end was pretty much bed bound. I'm 30 weeks into my 2 nd pregnancy and it started again last week. I've finished work now as I thought I might struggle in the last trimester and I have a 2 yr old. The advice I had first time is just not feasable this time. I can't stay still all when it's bad or avoid the stairs. I find now planning ahead with your jobs and toddlers routine so that your neither sitting or standing for too long. I have to Hoover and mop but I just take my time and try not to twist and walk in a straight line. Avoid side stepping and long strides. You do feel a bit silly going round in small steps but its worth it in the end. Hope this helps. It is a horrible condition that unless you have it you don't really understand. Xx
Thank you all for your comments and advice on this. Really interesting to hear what you have all experienced and has clued me up a bit more. I love this site because of the support and kind words from people you've never met and often much more helpful than our own midwives! Well today I phoned my midwife who put me onto the maternity physio dept at the hospital. I have an appointment now for the 25 th April, which is ages away. Not sure how I'll get on waiting that long! So I'll certainly be trying out your advice an tips to cope with it, very useful, thanks Carolinedarz. I really hope I don't end up having to stay in bed like some of you have mentioned. That really seems like an impossibility with a toddler as you have said lesse80. Wendywoo82 when do the levels of relaxin start to decrease? I'm guessing it's after delivery? The physio dept did say there may be the change of a cancellation coming up sooner than the 25th so fingers crossed for that! Again thanks for your help and well wishes

Hi pregnant ladies, I'm not pregnant but had spd 16 years ago and now I've finished with my periods altogether.
This is my third time of getting pubic pain since having had my family. GP has prescribed painkillers and anti inflammatory tablets. I just can't get to the bottom of my problem and the spd I had was quite severe all those years ago. I wore a special maternity belt, was physioed out and had crutches in my second and last pregnancy. I'm reading alot of you are not getting any help. You must get the help as it's so debilitating and I got housebound with mine. I was told by my local health visitor that one lady's pelvis softened and crumbled in their pregnancy. This is a serious condition.
