How effective was perineal massage for you?

I'm wondering if doing this actually helps reduce tearing or not. I found a youtube video which demonstrates a method of massage and I think I'd like to give it a go as I certainly would like to reduce any tearing if I can. I would love to know your experiences.

I am also very keen to know the answer to Kaleidoscope's question! I friend of mine did it before she had her first, but then ended up having to have a c-section so never found out if it helped or not ... The 'What to Expect' book says that if you do try it, to be gentle as you don't want to damage yourself ... Can people also recommend any products (sorry to piggyback on your question, Kaleidoscope!)?

Vitamin E oil I think is supposed to be good for using down there. Here is the youtube video clip I found. I still haven't done it. I'm scared too in some ways!

Gently gently sounds like very good advice!
