I have been told today I have increased red blood cells - why ? Does any one know of this

It is a condition called polycythemia and there are a wide variety of causes: ranging from dehydration to abnormalities in the bone marrow. It can be genetic or acquired.
Further tests from the doctor should explain more about why. If it is slightly raised it is more likely to be dehydration and a temporary raise in number but if abnormally high there may be something more serious going on.
