We've just found out that we are about 6-7 weeks pregnant and its been a few years since our last child was born, what are the next steps? do we contact our local GP to be put in touch with a midwife or do we contact the midwives directly?
we'd really appreciate any help,
Thanks x

Congratulations. I had to contact my gp surgery so they could do the paper work and send it off to the community midwife who then will get in touch with you and do all the usual checks in the comfort of your own home then your second time you see them will be at your gp surgeries antenatel surgery. hope this a help i am only 9 weeks today and my midwife has just got in touch with me
I rang up my surgery and just said i need to register with a mid wife and they took down my details and then passed it on to a mid wife. They said she would call within 2 weeks to arrange a midwife appointment. She called about 4 days after and went in for my appointment when i was around 8 weeks.
I saw my GP, who sent off relevant paperwork, but didn't see midwife until my 12 week scan. At 12 week scan, they also took medical history etc, and assessed individual circumstances to determine whether all midwife care would be at the hospital or community midwife. I think variance in processes depend on your NHS Trust, but common starting point is GP - they'll let you know what happens next.
