Hi k1989,

Congratulations on getting near the end! Here are some suggestions from the NCT website on what you can do to try and get labour started:

If you’re feeling fed up and uncomfortable, or if you want to avoid a medical induction, you might be tempted to try and start labour off yourself. There are many different ways that women have used to attempt this, though none has been shown to be widely effective.

Sex or sexual arousal, including nipple stimulation, raises levels of oxytocin in your body. It may also offer the benefits of physical exercise, feeling emotionally fulfilled and passing the time!

Taking castor oil, or eating spicy foods, have been recommended as well. This is probably because they may stimulate the action of the gastric system, and an association has been suggested between the gastric and reproductive systems.

Acupunture, reflexology, homeopathy, herbalism, and aromatherapy all offer methods of encouraging labour to start, but again, research into effectiveness has not been established.

Your body produces labour hormones more readily if you’re relaxed, and one way of helping labour to start might be to try some relaxation exercises, and perhaps to spend time thinking about your baby.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on!

Just hang in there!! The last weeks seem to take forever, but there's important work still being done. At 37 weeks, your baby would be considered premature and may require special treatment in a neonatal clinic. At best, this is likely to mean limited physical contact with your baby, at worst, ongoing health issues for your little girl. A little patience and discomfort for another few weeks is such a small price to pay for a healthy bubba!

There was a great post on this blog site a few weeks back about how to help your baby into correct position - definitely worth a read. Personally, I swear by daily walks and sitting on a gym ball rather than chair or couch whenever possible (still had a stint on the couch each day to get my feet back to normal!).

Find little ways of filling in the time - book yourself a pedicure, find a good book (or good magazine - I found my concentration wanting in the last few weeks), book a few trips to a cafe with friends ... whatever it takes to fill the time.

You're so close now!! And your little girl will let you know when she's ready :)

All the best

37 weeks is considered full term and baby wouldn't need to go to scbu unless there was major problems. Try and hang in there, it will all be worth it xx

Spot on! I misread something on NHS website some time back. One of the hazards of trying to read with a toddler who's firmly entrenched in the climbing phase! Ever experienced that conflicting mix of absolute pride in skills and sheer terror of potential consequences?? :)

Apologies to k1989 if I caused any concern!!

Nothing will get that baby out til it is ready, except maybe an induction...things might help but only if baby is ready..enjoy the last few weeks of freedom and try to get rest..you need all the energy you can muster to to labour well xxxxx
