Supply issue?

Hello there, I hope everyone is well. I have a question about milk supply. Initially feeds were taking 2 hours or more so with the advice of my health visitor and lactation consultant and improving the latch I was told to feed for max 20 -30 mins and then top up with expressed breast milk. This has been working well. When he slows his sucking I was told to switch breasts. This was also working well. However, recently I have noticed when switching back to the left breast for a second time, after a very short while bubba becomes frustrated and fussy and doesn’t seem to be taking as much milk. I switch him back to the right breast and he happily sucks away.

I have noticed that when expressing I get significantly less milk from the left breast than the right and the flow is slower. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

TIA

He's probably upping your supply by fussing at you breast and your expressing less as he's becoming better at removing the milk and your supply is regulating. He's also probably got a preference to your right boob a little. My little one has just turned one and although she'll feed from both, she prefers to be on the right boob to finish a feed or to feed to sleep.

If his weight gain is on track now and your getting lots of wet and dirty nappies I would try not to worry too much. Songs like you're doing a great job 😁

Thank you Seb9 . Yes we have plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Weightis a tough one as the last time he was weighed was at 2 week midwife check where we were discharged. HV only doing zoom apt’s and virtual support when required! He seems to be bigger tho

I really would try and give yourself a break and not stress too much, if you're feeding on demand and he's got good output try to trust that he's getting on OK.

The fussing is totally normal, my little one would sometimes get really angry with my boobs and give them a right telling off and smack to up my supply.

Those first few weeks are really hard and they feel attached to you 24/7 but if you get through these early days it does start to get easier.

👋 I had the same issue for the first 4 months with baby only wanting to suckle from left side and fussy on the right. I was told to feed from the less favoured/more fussy side first, then the better side, then the fussy side again. I had a problem with milk ‘stones’ or ‘blebs’ on the right in particular and I think she was fussing throuh frustration. I took lecethin to help sort out the blebs. It evened out when baby got bigger and was able to suck better and her mouth got bigger. I think it’s pretty normal to have one produce more milk though. As Seb9 says as long as baby is gaining weight and weeing/pooping there is no need to worry or feel inadequate! I found the worst thing with BF was putting pressure on myself. As soon as I stopped worrying over it I found it easier and baby was much more relaxed too.

I exclusively express and get loads more, sometimes up to 3x, out of one side (the right, coincidentally). I've been told it's normal. It's unfortunate as I've now got one boob considerably bigger than the other 🤦‍♀️
