Hi, I’m 29 weeks pregnant I have been told I have gestational diabetes however has anyone given birth having this? As they are saying I have a big baby I want to know how big he could possibly come out and do you still have a regular birth?
Thank you x

I had gestational diabetes, I had to have a big change in my diet to low carbohydrates and low sugar and was given a kit to test my blood four times a day and had to keep my sugars under 7.2.
I managed really well on diet and exercise most of the way through the rest of my pregnancy but had to take Metformin for the last few weeks to help my levels stay low.
I had extra scans and meetings with the consultants and obstetrician, to discuss how I was getting on and my birth plan.
My baby never got too big and I was scheduled for an induction a week after my due date, but on my last scan baby hadn't grown much so they bought my induction forward in case my placenta had started to break down.
My induction went well and baby was born 6lb 1oz.
Your diabetes nurse and midwife should be able to help you with everything your need to do, you may have pills or be given insulin to inject, but diet changes is the best place to start.
If baby does look to be very big, an elective C-section might be the safest option for you and baby x
I have been given the kit to test my bloods and that’s going really well so far I have had one high but that was due to a tablet I was given from the doctor, just with everything that is going on all my appointments are over the phone so it’s a little different to seeing face to face I have another scan due so fingers crossed everything is ok. I was just a little worried as they have said I have a large baby but that’s all, thank you for your help x
