I’m about 9 weeks pregnant with my second and have had uncontrollable sickness for 4 weeks now. About two weeks ago a dr at my local a&e said I probably had a bug. But it’s gone on way too long for a bug.
I have my first midwife appointment on Monday but am miserable. I’m tired (not able to sleep) weak, nauseous and throwing up shortly after anything I eat. I’ve tried to keep to a simple bread and banana diet but even then I’m not keeping anything down. Water is starting to even be an issue.
So my questions are - can midwifes prescribe anything or will I have to see my gp?. And does anyone have any tips on what will help. I’ve tried all the standard ginger ale etc etc
Thanks 🙂

If you can't hold water down you need to call your doctor as it cud be Hyperemesis gravidarum i had it with my little girl and i lost a lot of weight all the way through my pregnancy but i was talking to hospital and put on a drip and given to tips of tablets to stop the sickness dont panic the baby will be fine it will take all it needs from you the Hyperemesis gravidarum can go away as fast as it came but in some cases you can have it until baby is born like me but the tables worked but i would definitely get check out best for luck x
Call your gp and tell them you are persistently sick which has got worse and now can’t keep water down so now your feeling weak and dehydrated. They should give you antisickness tablets straight away. If in uk as it’s the weekend and gp is shut ring 111 to get an out of hours gp appointment. An out of hours gp can also write your prescription. Please do not delay. I have hypermesis gravidarum and it’s awful it’s best to get treatment ASAP to avoid staying in hospital on awful drips. If the tablets don’t work ask to try something else as there are lots of different ones. Also I’m 25 weeks pregnant and still can’t keep down water or cold squash. Try fizzy water with a squeeze of lemon (I live on it) or hot squash or peppermint tea. Try different fruit juices- I can’t keep down orange or apple but if I mix them together it’s fine 😂. Do one tiny sip every 5-10 mins. It’s a pain but your body is more likely to keep it down. Wishing you all the best and I deeply sympathise I know how draining and isolated it can make you feel. How it improves for you soon xx
Sorry you're feeling so rotten. I've had (and have still got) hyperemesis gravidum. If you're struggling to stay hydrated its time you speak to your gp or 111 about getting some form of anti-sickness meds to keep you going. If you're struggling with work aswell it will be your gp who can sign you off and because it's a pregnancy related illness it doesn't count towards any "sick days".
I've been told the whole way through that the little one will feed off your nutritional reserves so it doesn't really matter if you can't keep much food in but staying hydrated is really important. A good way to check is if you're weeing (if you're not you need to go to A&E as hyperemesis is a medical emergency) and what colour it is, you should be aiming for a straw colour.
Also if the first lot of anti-sickness tablets don't work for you, there are many options. To start with I had a combination of meds and I'm reguarly now on 1 which takes the edge off the nausea so I now can function but I'm still sick. I have others for breakthrough "vomiting emergencies" as a just in case. (I'm a stubborn nurse that refuses to be admitted to a trust I work in- I've been told off by my gp lots!)
Eat and drink what ever you want and don't be surprised if something you wanted the day before turns your stomach the next day. Experiment with food and just eat whatever you want, if its just cake than at least you're getting some sort of nutrition in and that's better than nothing at all! Don't be hard on yourself either, it's not fun so make sure you take time for you even whilst feeling awful. If you feel like you're really struggling, your midwife can offer emotional support.
Its the absolute pits isn't it! My husband has been poorly so I've not slept very much and that's triggered off a nice vomming attack just in time for Christmas! You have my sympathies and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the meds help soon x
My friend had something prescribed to her which helped so hopefully they can you help you out now you've got them as its sounds like your at the far end of the spectrum!
I had all day sickness from bang on 6 weeks but wasn't throwing up as much as it sounds you are. I barely ate at the start but the midwife said not to worry as it will be taking all it needs from me to start with anyway. The sickness did start to get better around 14 weeks, and now, at 20+4 I only tend to feel sick every time I eat and I'm maybe sick once a week.... better than nothing hey 🤷🏼♀️ lol xxx
