You don’t always have to. In my area you go on your local hospitals website and fill a form out for the midwives and they contacted me at 8 weeks to see me at 10 weeks. I never saw a GP. Maybe call your surgery and ask how things work there. Congratulations xx

Think it depends on your area, I’m Scotland and we don’t see a GP, there’s an NHS midwife number I called and they book you in for your ‘booking in’ appointment with the midwife and 12 week scan. Good luck x

It's basically so your GP can refer you to the nearest maternity service. Although some places allow you to register directly with them.
You need to complete an online self referral form for maternity services with your local hospital. You can do this on the hospital's website. Once you've registered they'll write you confirming this and will book your first appointment.
