Pregnant and at uni

Hi everyone, I have recently just found out I am pregnant and I am a full time student. My partner works full time, and I am wondering on what we are entitled too as a student? If anyone has any experience or information they can pass on that would be a big help!

Hi I think u may get some benefits, depending on age area

Look on the gov website as u maybe able to apply or at least look through the process

You may get some support with living etc too if you are in student accommodation.

I have been on the Gov website and it isn't the easiest to navigate round! it may be a case of ringing them instead. Thank you!!

Hi I am a student and based on my circumstances this is what I receive. If you claim student finance and receive a maintenance loan then it will be increased as you have a dependent now. You will also be entitled to a bursary every 3months which you do not have to pay back which is £500 pounds every 3 months. You will be eligible for a free childcare grant which Student finance provides, in which they pay up to 85% of your childcare fee whilst you attend university . Welfare benefits that you can claim, are Child benefit which is around £20 a week and Child Tax credits which is around £60.00 a week.

Lastly if you approach your council in relation to housing, they can provide a accommodation and provide you with part housing benefit, depending on the details you provide.

I’m nearly 25 weeks pregnant and a full time student who’s not working (I’ve been so sick with this pregnancy I couldn’t keep up with work) I don’t think we are entitled to any benefits until after the baby is born, but I’m an NHS student on a bursary so that might affect it anyway (that £300 per month is obviously so helpful). Good luck with your studies though, I’ve found mine really hard but hopefully yours are easier

You can check your state benefit entitlement here:

moneysavingexpert.com/famil...

Also some universities provide a creche so look into that and ask the university if they offer any bursaries or extra support to student mums. You should be able to suspend your course for a year if you need to, but this may complicate the benefit situation, just do as much reading as you can. The benefits system can be very slippery so make sure you know your stuff.

I’ll be honest hun.

I was in the exact same situation! Found out a year before I finished my degree that I was pregnant.

You can only claim certain stuff depending on certain circumstances like if you live with parents/on your own/with partner, annual income of the household.

I know my uni gave me a living allowance on top of my student loan but only once you apply. You can also get a childcare loan for cresh and stuff like that but I had family helping me out so I didn’t need that. So not too sure on that one.

Look at ucas.com or student finance England for more details. Even ring student Finance they will help you better.

Other than that I only Get child benefit at 20.70 a week. I’ve still not heard back from child tax and my baby is 14 months....

You can always nip to you local council office for advice too if you can’t find it online xx
