Ultrasound

Hi all,

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I'm still waiting for my first appointment with the midwife (I've been waiting for almost 2 weeks and haven't received a letter yet).

I'm thinking to pay for a private ultrasound when I get 8 weeks. Does anyone know a good clinic in London to do it? Do you think worth it? I'm thinking just because I think I'll be more relaxed if I know that it's real and ok.

Many thanks

Usually your booking in app is between 8-12w hopefully you’ll get an appointment soon x

I didn’t hear from my midwife until 9 weeks and saw her at 10 weeks. Congratulations on your pregnancy though xx

First scan on the nhs is at 12 weeks. We did private scans. You are just looking for a heartbeat that early so any company would do.

However if you want top notch i went to a clinic in Harley street that had a package for the harmony test and two scans for something like £400. They did a 10 and 12 week scan. At 10 weeks development you get to see arms and legs moving about

Fetal medicine centre

It's still early, my midwife didn't get in contact with me until I was 9 and half weeks and appointment was at 10 weeks.... I had all my scans at window to the womb and they were really good, have a look and see if there's a clinic near you xxxxx

Call your GP again. I got a call from the midwife within 3 hours of telling my GP i was pregnant and she booked me in, no letter just have to turn up at the antenatal clinic at the hospital next Monday but my scan won't be until about 12 weeks.

They wouldn’t be able to see anything really at 8 weeks. Rest easy. You’re fine and you’re going to be an amazing mom. I know how you feel but trust me... everything is ok. Go at the required time. Too many ultrasounds is not good for the fetus at a young fetal age.

A scan at 8 weeks is quite clear. I had one with my fertility clinic and it was good. I had 5 ultrasounds before 12 weeks and my baby is fine. They wouldn’t of performed so many if there was risk to the baby

You can google it yourself. Of course not everything is textbook but it is scientifically determined that too many ultrasounds are not good for a young fetus. And not everytime, some women egg is not in place and they are not able to see anything and may ask them to come back in two weeks. Remember, not every experience is like yours. It’s best to just wait the desired time that is recommended universally by doctors than just going off of one person account. But at the end of the day, this is just the internet... no big deal. You can do whatever you want in your real life.

I did google it when I was having a few ultrasounds and there is no proof that’s it bad for baby. They wouldn’t offer growth scans etc if it was bad. I wasn’t saying everyone is going to have the same experience as me I’m not stupid but if someone wants a scan then that’s up to them. You were saying they wouldn’t be able to see anything at all at 8 weeks not that there may be a chance they wouldn’t see anything so I was just advising that you can see something at 8 weeks

Listen I’m not here to argue or go back and forth. It’s not that serious. You shared your opinion.. I shared mine. It’s important to note we live in two different countries so before trying to correct me just take into consideration medical practices may be different. Thanks tho. Have a great one and enjoy your weekend! :)

I had a private ultrasound at 7 weeks 3 days (I didn’t know I was 7 weeks 3 days, but they measured baby at that), she looked like a little robin on the scan and you could see the heart beat. I had it for reassurance, and confirmation! (First baby).

I then had the NHS scan at 12 weeks as normal.

I had a gender scan at 16 weeks, private again.

Then my 20 week scan, as normal. Reason for the kind of 4 weekly scans with me was anxiety, I didn’t feel any proper movements until around 18/19 weeks (which is normal, but I couldn’t help but worry). Now I’m 27 weeks I haven’t once had an urge to go (and haven’t since my 20 week scan) and book another scan because I can feel her moving, it’s absolutely magical and so reassuring! I don’t intend to have any more scans unless I need to due to health reasons for baby.

I researched quite heavily before going for extra scans. It’s basically the heat that’s transmitted to the baby that can be the cause for concern but generally speaking short ultrasounds don’t cause damage. Extensive use does, but then who knows what extensive use is? You will get lots of varied opinions on “extra scans”. The baby always has a higher temperature than you and raising it is what you need to avoid, hence all the guidelines around baths, jacuzzis, saunas etc. 3D/4D are said to have more chance of increasing temp than 2D due to the amount of sound waves they have to transmit to produce that sort of picture, so I’m not intending on having one of those. (Plus I kind of like the idea of not having a clue what she’s going to look like until she’s here!)

Whatever you do, it’ll be right for you!

Also, I didn’t receive my booking appointment until around 9 weeks as I only found out around 7 weeks, so was a bit delayed on getting in for 8 weeks. At the first appointment you don’t really get that much confirmation that your pregnant either, it’s kind of information overload only.

Your more than welcome. Give me a message if you have any questions about anything 😊 (not that I’m a professional, but it’s nice having someone on your wave length to chat with).

I didn't have a midwife appointment until 10 weeks. Nothing much happens at that appointment. First NHS scan at 12 weeks but can be up to 14 depending on where you are.

Most ivf people here get private scans at 6 or 8 weeks. My clinic advised me to book one. I was using a clinic abroad otherwise they would have asked me to come in to have one.

So go ahead and book a private. X

I should say at 6 weeks all I could see was a blob with a little white flicker. At 8 weeks I could make out a baby shape x

I went for a private scan at 11 weeks because I felt I needed the reassurance..my actual nhs scan was scheduled for 2 weeks later but I was going out of my mind especially with pretty much no symptoms. Definitely worth the money!! Made me feel so much better. I say go for it x
