Hello everyone

Expecting our first baby and no idea about how and when to use sleeping bags. As there are different togs and different things they should/should not be worn with to keep baby at right temperature - should these be used with newborns or not till bigger?

Any advise welcome x

Hiya I wouldn’t use them for new born x unless the head fits snug into the neck that the baby can’t wriggle down into. I think I stared the gro snug ones after a couple of months x

Hi there

We used a swaddle grow bag when our twins were newborn in their Moses baskets and just tucked a blanket around their lower half if it got a bit cold. We didn’t start using sleeping bags until they were about 2 months. I use a 1/1.5 tog for milder weather and 2.5 tog for cold. Then put vests under babygrows as necessary (short or long sleeve). Our swaddle bags were amazing and they really helped our girls sleep. I’ll try and find them online (they were a gift) and post a link. Xx

This is the one we had. I have to say it was amazing and the girls knew once they were swaddled it was bedtime. They were also like Houdini with the muslin swaddles 🙈, so this one was brilliant as it kept them snug. I know not all babies like being swaddled so it may have to be trial and error with your little one.

We also got the sleeping bags with the arm poppers for when they first went in them to keep them snug. John Lewis do them. Xx

I used sleep bags from the start. If you get ones with poppers under the arms they are more secure. I did switch to blankets after a while as I felt she was a bit warm in the one I had and blankets were fine as she didn’t wriggle much. You can normally find a guide online as to what tog to buy and then sizes are normally 0-6 months etc. They are a god send now she’s wriggling from top to bottom of her cot xx

They shouldn’t be used until over a certain weight, with Gro-bags it’s 8.8lb, it’s also not advisable to use them if you plan on cosleeping due to over heating concerns. There is a guide to weights and also what’s to dress baby in for different temperatures here gro-store.com/guides/grobag

We used them from the start, but had a large baby. The grosnug (swaddle type grobag) has a very small head hole and I can imagine it's good for an average sized newborn - we were given one as a gift and couldn't use it because it was too tight around my son's neck even at a few days old.

I didn't realise you shouldn't use them to a certain weight and used them from the start at 7lb 9oz. I rolled up the bottom and had her at the bottom of the cot. They had poppers under the arms so all was ok.

Might need a swaddle in the early days to make the baby feel secure.
