Zika virus travelling

Hey girls,

I’m looking to visit Mexico Tulum for my birthday, in conversation I mentioned to the travel agent I’m looking to go for a “baby moon” before he arrives. She paused and asked me if I know about Zilla virus. I’ve heard of it but never really investigated what it really is.

I have googled and it says moderate risk. I’m 18+6 weeks all advice is welcome. Has anyone visited a Zika hit area before?

Hello, personally I wouldn’t go too any destination that has the Zika virus, if your pregnant or tying to get pregnant. They say if your pregnant do not travel to places that have the virus. Only takes that 1 mosquito to bite, sorry if I’m putting you off, but I know I would rather be safe and not put myself and my baby at harm x

I also wouldn’t go. I had my little boy via IVF and my clinic wouldn’t have even treated me if I’d recently been to or planned to go anywhere that was anything other than very low risk.

It’s your choice but my advice would be to choose somewhere different as really it’s an unnecessary risk that you don’t need to take. I think I’d just feel too worried about getting bitten to actually enjoy my holiday anyway x

Hi, I wouldn’t risk my pregnancy even if there was a very tiny chance of risk. However, it’s up to you. You can always visit Mexico after you have your baby. Xx

Hello Amreenak,

I went back to Malaysia via Indonesia and went transit back to U.K via Bangkok. We plan this trip in November 2017 not knowing I will ever be pregnant and then, surprise! All three places are considered Zika affected area and I was about 10 weeks. I knew about the risk and I was not comfortable at all but I really need to visit my parents. I now fall in the high-risk category. If I have the option I would not travel, because you just add another things to worry on top of the list of a new parent. There is still no accurate blood check to see if you are infected. However, if it is essential, take precautions, wear loose clothes, cover yourself, repellent with DEET, where it 24-7. take care of your self and keep hydrated as it will be a long haul flight.

Thank you so much girls, I will avoid at all costs. I know it will upset and hurt me if anything happened to the bambino. I can’t guarantee a mosquito won’t bite me so it’s really not worth the risk. I really appreciate all the advice x
