I’ve started packing my hospital bag I’ve got 11 weeks to go and me and my mother have no idea if we have to take our own milk in in case breastfeeding doesn’t happen?

Hello,

Maybe check with your Midwife if the hospital you’re going to supply formula. I’m in Edinburgh and they supplied little bottles of pre-made formula xxx

Lucky that your hospital provides you with some, At my hospital we’ve got to take our own or pay £4 a bottle, I would take some of the starter pack bottles with you just in case xx

My hospital gave me some as I struggled feeding on day one. My baby was diagnosed with a tongue tie later that night, and feeds fine now. Although I was provided with a couple I'd recommend to friends (and for myself for the future) taking in bottles of premade formula. You can buy them with individually sterralised teats now as well. I really wish I had a few packed in my bag, so I wasn't relying on the hospital staff that night, my husband bought some to us the next day. I'm sure my baby didn't actually eat for the first several hours despite my attempts at feeding her. She's a month today and is perfectly fine though. Still ask your Midwife to see what your hospital will do, but that's from my personal experience.

You dont take your own formula asmost hospitals dont have facilities to make sterile bottles, they stock prepackaged formula and sterile teats to go on them.

The hospital I’ll be going to do have ready made milk but you have to pay now for them think it’s around £6-8

I’m going to hopefully breastfeed again but I’m going to pack premade milk just in case there the ones with the teats which you throw after use x hope that helps I guess it depends on the hospital and area you are. My first born 15 years ago you got given milk if you wanted it but now you have to pay x

At my hospital the only reason you’d need to take your own formula is if you were planning to formula feed from the beginning with no plans at all to breastfeed.

If you intend to breastfeed but there’s a reason why you are unable to, they’ll provide some.

Just in case your hospital have a different policy though, you could maybe either give them a call on the delivery or post-natal ward or ask your midwife. x

My hospitals I've been under 3 for my different kids. All said you can bring your own sterile bottled kits specifically but you can't bring tubs and normal bottles due to lack of sterilizing facilities. However all of mine also provided formula free of charge so you would have to ask your hospital

My hospital provided ready made milk in sterile bottles xx
