Hi my little girl is 7 months now and I really want to try this BLW but I’m just so nervous about her choking. I currently give her mashed food and she loves it. Does anyone have any tips for me ?

Read the book Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley, borrow it from your local library or children’s centre if you don’t want to buy it. It will reassure you about the difference between gagging and choking. Trust your baby to be able to manage solids. I did blw with both of mine, my second was always gagging but I knew to let him get on with it and work it out, giving gentle reassurance to him and never leaving him alone while eating. Have a look on your local NCT page for blw courses, I did one with my first baby and it really helped to give me confidence to know what to do.

Ask your children’s centre or local NCT branch about paediatric first aid courses so you know what to do if your baby does choke.

Relax and enjoy baby led weaning, the benefits are fantastic. Whenever possible try to eat at the same time as your child so they can see what you’re doing and that the food is safe.
