how long have you been trying? If it's been a year or more see your gp who will do some tests to check you are ovulating, that your hormone levels are ok and may refer you to a fertility clinic. Only other advice is cut out alcohol, smoking, eat a healthy diet and take your folic acid if you aren't already doing those things.

You can get folic acid as part of pre pregnancy vitamins from any pharmacy and most super markets

There’s an app in the App Store via iPhones and Samsung phones that you can get for free! You can get folic acid and vitamin d from your chemist or online from Holland and Barrett! If you’ve had a period count from day one to the end of period and usually 7 days later is when your fertile! X

It is harder if you are not regular, as you don't know when you might be ovulating... however you can get ovulation sticks to check. Ovulation normally tends to have around 10-14 days after a period so might be worth checking around that time.

Also if you are irregular and have been trying for a year probably worth seeing your gp to do some basic hormone tests etc.

If your periods are irregular it's best to do an ovulation test every day to accurately place ovulation, I thought I wasn't oculating but it turns out I ovulate at 16 days and just hadn't tested that far. I conceived that month. You can get 50 ovulation tests on Amazon for under £10. But also seek a doctors advice for further hormone tests xx

Hi Shannonlansdoen. I swear by ovulation strips! When we were trying I bought a pack from amazon. It was something like 100 for £8 and well worth it. As the line gets darker when you’ve used them you’ll know when your ovulating. I found them more useful then anything else when ttc and using with an ovulation app will help too. Try ovia and glow people share experiences and you learn so much. The apps have useful tips and will help you get to know your body ect. Hope this helps! X

hi , i have seen you have said to someone you have irregular periods this is probably the problem you may be ovulating very infrequently or maybe not at all. I don't want to be nosy or offensive !but what is your weigh and height. are you at a healthy weight ? I have had 5 children within 6 years. ages 6 , 4 , 3, 20 months and 7 months.also a early miscarriage in 2015. yes I'm mad ! lol also not a believer in birth control unless we can't afford another etc.. we still would like more but for me I can only get pregnant at a good weight .at the moment I am overweight. which means my periods stop or come very infrequently. so I'm not ovulating. I haven't had a period in 3 months I am trying to eat healthy to lose weight now for my periods to return. also inbetween having my children I didn't have periods when I had gained weight. I had unprotected sex for 18 months and did not fall pregnant. please don't worry that you can't have children. there could be many other factors. As I said you may not be overweight but even gaining a little can take a huge toll on your reproductive hormones. fat causes too much oestrogen levels which too much of is no good for fertility. xx

I'm not sure on my height or weight but i have had all my hormone levels checked and they are all at the right level

that's good to hear. remember it can take healthy couples a year or more to conceive . also as others said would highly recommend using ovulation tests. I got pregnant much quicker knowing when I was ovulating :)

I have always had irregular periods and had tried to conceive for more than 3 1/2 years. I found ovulation aps useless due to the irregularity of my periods and ovulation strips rarely picked up me ovulating. I had Acupuncture for fertility and my acupuncturists advise was to get my thyroid (TSH levels) checked. When you get your thyroid results ask for the TSH number, don't accept the word normal as normal is anything under 4.2, but to get pregnant and stay pregnant your TSH must be around 2 or 2.5. I found my thyroid levels were 'normal for the uk' at 3.9, but not where they needed to be to get pregnant and stay pregnant (may account for my 2 miscarriages). I have had a battle with my GP about my thyroid as many are still unaware of this, but I am now pregnant and my consultant at the hospital is insisting I remain on medication for thyroid issues and that I have tests every 6 weeks to check it stays around 2. Definitely don't give up.
