Hello everyone. I am 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I am having pain in my symphysis pubis since a week. I know backaches and leg cramps do happen in pregnancy but never heard anyone complaining about pubic bone pain. Please share your valuable experiences. Thankyou.

Hi there, I had excruciating pain during my last 2 pregnancies and was able to get a hip belt from the hospital. They also recommended some gentle exercises that helped. It's very common to have SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) In pregnancy due to certain hormones being released that help loosen up ligaments ready for giving birth. Speak to your midwife and ask to be referred to a physiotherapist.

I also have this. I know it as PGP when I mentioned it to midwife she said it was fairly common I think 1 in 5 will have either PGP or SPD, my midwife didn't say a lot about it only that it's the muscles relaxing, mine is so bad sometimes I can barely walk, which is not ideal as they say to stay active. Midwife did say that if I wanted she would sort physio, but she said they would only really give me a belt. I am going to mention it to midwife again next week! Somethings you can do to ease the pain include keeping legs together when getting out of car, sitting to put knickers and trousers on, sleep with pillow Between legs but to be honest no of these have helped me! Thankyou for your advice. I am surely going to try these. Xx

Hi Fary,

Where do you live? I am a chiropractor with specialist training in treating pregnancy related issues especially spd which is common and can be helped. There are many gentle techniques and exercises that may help. I can put you in touch with someone local to you that does similar work to myself. You could also look up spinning babies on Internet for general advice.

Hey, I am 32 weeks and have been suffering from PGP for months now! I have ups and downs... i was given a belt (helps at times but not always) and some exercises to do by physio who said there was little that could be done for the pubic bone pain (easier with back pain)... exercises in the pool is probably the best way to stay active whilst not aggravating the pain. You might also want to check the Pelvis Partnership website (pelvicpartnership.org.uk/) as she might have some helpful advice! I'm also seeing a cranial osteopath who has been quite helpful. Not walking for long time, smaller steps help too.

Good luck, I hope it doesn't get too bad for you!

Sorry for the delayed response. No one working directly in Slough has got back to me. But I do have a colleague who works around Reading. Michelle Thomas, Reading Chiropractic Clinic. 41 Eastern Avenue. That might help. Best of health to you

Hi I also have pgp started just after christmas. 3rd pregnancy but second with pgp advice is don't hoover, iron or push heavy shopping trolly, walk slowly even when not hurting don't sit twisted or kneel on all fours 🙊. Also you can take paracetamol but I find this doesn't help me but you might be different this is something that doesn't go away until after birth so DON'T " push through" the pain it will not help I ended up crippled for about 2 days resting after I decided to push through and clean whole house in 1 day. I were tubigrip wrapped 3 times and find it helps also my phisio said try and sit with your knees lower than your hips. Hope this v long post has helped x

HI All suffering with SPD, I feel your pain.

I’m a clinical massage therapist, specialising in maternity massage.

But when I was pregnant ( 4 months ago) I struggled with SPD and found the typical exercises physo gave didn't relive the pain I found a way to treat this myself. So, I have chosen to research this for my degree. if your suffering with SPD or PGP or have done in the last year, please get in touch at treatMeAtHome@gmail.com
