The size of a hippo!?

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here and have a ton of worries and as a first time mum I just don't know what to expect.....

I am a larger lady - pre pregnancy weight of around 14st and am now 27 weeks and have gained around a stone since the start. I have battled with my weight all my life and am feeling quite frustrated at getting bigger and not being allowed to diet. Obviously I want the best foe my baby and I am worrying that I am going to gain too much weight and that I'll end up with a mahoosive baby because I am larger.

Does anyone have any tips? My midwife keeps telling me I'm fine and to stop worrying but at my last MW appointment at 25 weeks I was measuring 31cm and was really upset πŸ˜•

Will my baby be the size he/she is meant to be? Or is baby size down to my diet and eating habits? I am trying to eat sensibly but it is hard to not eat the bad stuff at times.

Any thoughts would be great,

Thanks everyone xx

I don't think your size will affect your baby's size that much. Do you know how much you weighed at birth, because I think that's a better guide. I was 8lbs1oz and am now a size 12 after 2 babies. My first baby weighed 8lbs12oz and my second was 9lbs 5oz. I have two sisters, my middle sister weighed 8lbs 8oz and my younger sister was 10lbs 8oz - my mum has always been a size 12/14 and she managed to have all three of us naturally.

It's more gestational diabetes I would have thought the midwife would have been worried about, than the size of the baby at this point. If you are really concerned, tell your midwife you would like to see a dietician to help you or ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician. My sister had gestational diabetes at the end of her second pregnancy and was sent to see a dietician so I don't see why you can't. Say it's really worrying you and hopefully she'll then refer you. Good luck and a happy and healthy pregnancy.

Thank you for your reply

I was a 7lb 10 baby at 41+ weeks and my sister was 8lb at 40w.

I'm sure I am worrying unnecessarily.

I had my GTT done yesterday but hopefully that will be ok. Results will be through next week. i have my next MW appointment next week so will tell her exactly how I feel and see what my bump measures and what I weigh in at.......

Relax lovely! I know exactly how you are feeling, both myself and completenewbie have posted very similar posts concerning our weight. I was also 14stone before i was pregnant and always aware of what I ate.

I only put on just over a stone when pregnant as i tried really hard at the beginning to be good, aswell as having bad morning sickness, but even when trying to be good, McDonalds and galaxy chocolate was still eaten. By the time i got to 30 weeks i was so fed up of being pregnant i thought to myself f**k it, ill have the best part of a year after to get rid of it. I ate mostly chocolate and chips the last few weeks as i ran out of energy, but that's when my little lady used up a lot of my calories.

I know its really hard, but try not to focus on your weight right now, its not just you remember. And if you want to and if it goes ok, breastfeeding really does burn calories. My daughter was born on the 1st june, and I'm now 13stone 5lbs, lighter than ive been for years, and I'm eating loads, and by loads i mean 2 bowls of sugary cereal for breakfast, 4 slices of toast and marmalade about 11, jacket potato, pasta or similar about 2, and a good big evening meal, and sometimes another bowl of cereal before bed. God that looks bad written down. Haha. I do maybe 4 miles slowish walking a week, aswell as going up and downstairs a million times a day for baby stuff, and am currently exclusively breastfeeding, though that took about 4 weeks to get my supply to be enough.

Hope that helps you relax a little, i know its hard. Big hugs. Xxx

Oh yeah, and my baby was a perfectly acceptable 7lbs 4ozs born at exactly 41 weeks after being induced. 😊 x

Thanks guys :-) xx

I am going to go with the flow and try and be sensible with my diet as best I can, get some more exercise in when i have the energy and try not to worry.

I am hoping to breastfeed or maybe express if that doesn't go so well - not sure on the bigger boobs if I will suffocate the baby, lol.

I can focus on trying to be as healthy as I can be and staying active (so long as my back and hip allows) and my first role as a mum is one of self sacrifice but just not to make myself ill in the process.

I have started to eat smaller meals now more often - this worries me as i am more likely to grab the bad snacks so I am trying not to buy them in the first place!

I guess everything I have ever tried to do in dieting now goes out the window but the bad habits i have adopted over the years are now even harder to ignore.

Watch this space........

You're doing everything right. And don't worry about boobs, mine are currently 36g and bloomin heavy. Hehe. And I hardly did any exercise after 30 weeks until the last week when I tried star jumps. Lol. The star jumps didn't work by the way. 😊 xx

I haven't weighed mine.........*heads off to the bathroom scales to investigate*

If it helps its perfectly safe to follow Slimming World while you are preggers. Sometimes going to a class can make you feel more supported too. Just focus on eating lots of veggies and protein for baba and don't worry about what you weigh.

I'm trying hard to be good too and not looking forward to my GTT!!

Good luck! x

I have thought about SW and will look into it again - my MW was trying to sort out some free sessions.

As for the veggies, sadly i seem to be going off them πŸ˜• eating plenty of fruit tho

Hi ladies,

I'm a bit happier now.......thank you for all your posts πŸ˜ƒ

I saw my MW this morning and I have only gained 4kg since my booking appointment and my GTT results were fine πŸ˜ƒ

I feel much more reassured by everyone and am happier that my weight gain is an acceptable gain and even more encouraging by only gaining 3cm in measurement for 3 weeks of baby growing πŸ˜ƒ perfect.

Xx
