I used aptamil to start with (comfort formula) then was told cow and gate is identical just cheaper!! So went to cow & gate and used that brand ever since! My son is almost 9 months and is in perfect health and only ever had 1 cold, never had a tummy bug!! Very healthy and happy chap!! :)

which cow&gate do u use? @rachgibson

We used the comfort to start with as my little boy had awful colic (that's why I stopped breastfeeding) then when he was about 4 months gave him stage 1 formula. If he is a colicy baby use the comfort stuff as it worked wonders for hugo otherwise just go for stage 1 :) xx

Thanks

I was unwell so had to stop breastfeeding and I used aptimil for a little while as well as expressing. I also then went over to cow and gate as it was cheaper lol but also it's a brand we've used before. No problem in the transition either x

Hi

Just to say I had an awful start to bfing. Got a badly cracked and infected nipple which was not nice. I stuck with it and it really did get so much easier and now I really love it and my lb who is nearly 6 months loves his milky too. Can you get down to a breast feeding support group and get some advice on latch or ask a midwife to help? I would have been disappointed stopping. Now the thought of stopping makes me so sad and the girls from my bf group all feel the same it's so lovely. Plus (and this isn't knocking formula feeders) it's so easy especially night feeds, free and you can eat tons!! Just make sure if you do give up you won't be feeling bad after. Maybe give nipple shields a go but sounds like baby doesn't have best latch. Good luck x

Especially the night feeds? Surely if you are formula feeding and your parter is able to do a night feed for you that is easier than you being the sole person able to do it?!

I used aptimil religiously with my neice and my daughter. My health visitor suggested it was the best one. It worked really well and when my neice had problems with colic we could move her to the comfort baby milk with aptimil and that was really good too. Their travel milks for out and about where also really handy and at an excellent price. Good luck. I couldn't breastfeed for.long either. So dont let people give you a hard time. You have tried and thats all you can do. Im trying again with my second when he comes in a few weeks time and hoping he takes to it better. If you want to continue with breast feeding though make sure that you havent got mastitis as you may need antibiotics and that baby is positioned correctly when feeding as it makes all the difference.

Hi, congratulations on your little one and try not beat yourself up some mums just can't breast feed no matter how hard they try for one reason or another (I was one one of those mums) I used aptamil first milk then we moved on to hungry milk we even had to use the toddler 1+ as my son did not like cows milk for a while. He is a very healthy and happy 2 and half year old.

I started with aptamil. My baby has horrible colics, very loose poos and a nappy rash, which improved with a changed to sma.

Well done for managing 7 days - you've done amazingly well and those early days are the most important. I used Aptamil First then switched to Comfort because my lo has terrible colic.

Hi tyra,

well done for trying as those 1st few days are very difficult and i was exactly the same when i gave birth to my 1st child in 2008, i think the thought of knowing what to expect got me through this 2nd time, but ive found cow and gate stage 1 formula to be fine with my son, and my LO, but i think they're all ultimately the same.

xx

Hi hope your feeling better. Formula is fine for new borns and in less enlightened times was considered better. As for the feeding and it's affects on your body I'd check for two things.

And

My wife had terrible trouble with our first and his condition led to sore nipples and then mastitis. By the time it was sorted out my wife had lost all her confidence in being able to breast feed. Fortunately forewarned was forearmed and she did really well with our second.

Good luck!
