Hello, I have consipitation and midwife said lactulose will work. It is another weird stuff in UK, she did not give prescription and said I should go GP. What is the meaning if I go again GP?

its means you need to get a prescription for the drug from the gp as the midwife is unable to prescribe it? you may be able to request this over the phone - phone your doctors and see what they say, ask whether they can prescribe without an appointment. If not you'll need to book an appt with your gp and let them know what the midwife said. Depending on the cost of laculose in a pharamacy you may be able to just buy it over the counter? might save you time etc if you don't mind paying.

Good source of information for you, Lactulose will help you but you do not want to be taking this all the time so probably need to be looking at your diet and increasing the Fibre content to keep you moving! Hope you get some relief soon

I'd add more fibre to my diet and drink loads of water to prevent constipation rather than taking meds for it.x

U Will get it free on prescription but ifu want u can go to the chemist and buy it. ..small bottle costs around £3-4 x

Midwives are not doctors - they can not prescribe. Hence you need to see your GP.

This is the point I do not understand if they are not doctors why do they care maternity checks. Until now, I know that (in my country gynecologists do all checks) UK will be the same dissappointed:(

In England is midwife led care unless u need to see consultant gynaecologist. ..they all have been trained to degree level all just based on babies. ..if u train as a nurse over here and are qualified u still need to do additional training to become a midwife so they do know their stuff. .. it must be hard when u have been used to a different way...g.p is here for u if u are sick. . Its a shame midwives can't prescribe it would save additional trips to the drs!

But as has been said lactulose is not a prescription only drug can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy. When taking it make sure you drink loads of water as it remains in the gut and attracts water, that is how it works, that is also why it is pretty safe cos doesnt really get into your system.

Don't be disappointed midwives are extremely well qualified for the role, supporting pregnancy, labour and first few days of life. If there are any problems you will be referred on to a consultant, this is much more tailored to your needs than GP led care.
