Dyeing my hair...

Hi guys,

I've read on the NHS website that it's ok to dye my hair when pregnant as the chemicals in dyes are harmless as they're in such low quantities. I was just wondering if anyone had dyed their hair and could recommend a good brand that was safest to use? I'm off to a wedding and want to look my best!!

Thanks,

Sara x

Hi,

I think it also depends & is dependant on how far along in your pregnancy you are too.

After about wk31 a baby has almost done with all its vital growing of organs & neccessary limbs so around this time would be fine.

xx

I have this issue! Dyed my hair the last time before we started trying. Now I have roots 3" long!

Husband says he ''cant notice them'' ....pah!

I've read to leave it til 12weeks. And to be on the safe side, highlights are better because the chemicals only get absorbed by the hair folicule, and not your skin -like they would if you dyed it all over.x

I can't wait! Especially as my Mum doesn't know I'm pregnant yet and everytime she sees me she makes a comment about my hair!! LOL

I have my roots touched up every 4-6 weeks and I have coloured my hair when I was pregnant before. I am natural ash blonde but dye it a lighter blonde. Just do a test on the underneath of your hair line to test that your skin hasn't gone sensitive from pregnancy. If the test patch is o.k and not got irratated then dye away and be the yummy mummy you want to be with no big fat roots.

I had my greys dyed for the first at around 12wks but i did go to the salon and had a patch test 48 hours before.

Whatever you do make sure you do a test patch first - enjoy the wedding!

Hi Sara, as above I've dyed my hair during pregnancy, personally I waited until after 12wks, but my midwife had said there was no problem with dying it before. Definitely do a patch testy first as hormones affect your skins reaction. I used garnier olia, just because it's supposed to be more natural, but obviously other brands may be just as good! Cx

Funnily enough I've just had mine done at 15 weeks but at 42 years old my grey roots were shocking, not seen'em in a few years!

I went to the hairdresser but where I'd normally go for an Inoa, which is permanent, I went for a semi permanent.

Highlights are also supposed to be good because they don't touch your scalp.

I read a few websites on this and the general consensus is don't leave the dye on too long and if you feel funny wash it off immediately.

I'm tempted to go for highlights I think to be on the safe side :) thanks everyone x

There isn't conclusive evidence that hair dyes may cause problems to the foetus but there are some studies that hint to issues. Again the evidence is not conclusive so it depends on your attitude to risk. I personally chose not to use regular dyes. There is this great database that you can search for different brands and find out their level of toxicity:

ewg.org/skindeep/browse/hai...

After trolling through it, I decided to use henna dye and specifically of the Light Mountain range which you can order at amazon.
