When I moved to the East Midlands I did not know anything about dialects. I needed an interpreter most of the time, but I gradually got used to it. I am from Essex but I am not a cockney as a lot of people say when I tell them.
I'm originally from the East Midlands although I've lived in Hertfordshire for so long I've lost most of my dialect. Until I meet up with my brother 😁 There are a few variations within the area- Leicestershire is very different from Notts where I come from. I know what you mean about the cockney - my husband got that a lot when he first went up there - and he's from Herts! Anywhere around the London area is cockney to many midlanders😁🐰
