Changing from Warfarin to Apixaban

Hi, I'm very confused! Just wondering what the general consensus is out there re changing from warfarin (which I'm currently on) to apixaban, my doc says that if I was presenting now with afib, I'd automatically be put onto this drug. My only concern is that UK does not seem to be providing an antidote in the case of, god forbid, a major bleed....with warfarin of course, there is the K2 injection. I remember reading somewhere that an antidote has been found in the US but is not currently available here in the UK, can anyone on Apixaban please let me know if this is still the case? Thanks.

Hi Chris1945,

I'm only going on what's been presented on the internet, (including content from the BNF) which says that the risk of bleeds occurring in the first place is lower with Apixaban than Warfarin. But if you are concerned about the switch, a medical professional, such as your GP will give you the facts if you ask.

Thanks for responding, it’s not so much the the possible internal bleed as you mentioned, what concerns me more would be if, god forbid, any kind of accident was involved where blood loss was present eg road a accident etc.,...on warfarin there’s the K2 option but although an antidote has been found for Apixaban in the US, as far as I can tell it’s not available here because it’s so expensive!

Can’t answer that I’m afraid - need to

speak with your consultant or whoever manages your anti coagulation. I can’t take it as not suitable if you have sticky blood so am on warfarin.

Hi. I don't know anything about this subject, but I just wanted to say that whenever I need this kind of information but don't want to bother the doctor, I phone the pharmacist at my local chemist's. Sometimes you get a locum, but if you can speak with the regular pharmacist they come to know you and it's a good relationship to have.

I hope you find out what you need. All the best. 🙂🌸

Hi Chris

I would voice your concerns to your doctor as it's a possibility that if there's any information online about this drug it's not correct. I personally would definitely go back to the doctor.

Hope you get the answers to your question.
