Could someone tell me if I’m a snob or just a moaner lol, but my neighbours are having a big bonfire and a bbq which is fine I have no issue with that, but I’ve had washing out drying and it’s all been ruined by all the smoke from the fire.. I thought you weren’t allowed fires at present.. my house smells of fire my washing will need to be washed again.. sorry for the moan 🤔🤔😟

I'd find that annoying too Pixie74, but then my neighbours always tell me if they are going to have a bonfire. Why do they need too have one so early in the day? I think it's inconsiderate.

I’m not usually bothered about bonfires but I’m annoyed that my washing and house smells of smoke.. I thought there was a time scale to have fires.. I find it so inconsiderate all they had to do was shout over fence

Jennymary profile image

That's really inconsiderate, all they to do was either pop a note through your day or knock on your door and tell you they were going to have a bonfire which would have given you time to get your washing in

My neighbours are the same with their bbq Pixie? 🤨

It’s just so unfair, nice weather to be sat in the garden and to chill, 😑

I thought I was sounding snobby, if it was me I’d be considerate and inform them when I’d be having one.. now they have a lot of visitors 😡😡

You are right to have a moan. It's disgraceful and extremely bad manners to not tell you they would be lighting a bonfire. I believe bonfires are a no, no, these days because of the environment. I don't think they are banned but shouldn't be lit until after 6 Oclock anyway.

Very thoughtless of your neighbours. Not just bad fumes what about our health?. Perhaps you could just politely ask them when you see them next, to let you know next time they intend having a bonfire as you had to wash the clothes again. Said gently in a non aggressive manner is the way to approach it. Hopefully they will understand and take it on board.

Good luck

Yep the rule is after 6pm.

There are no rules about the time of day, just common sense.

"Contrary to some belief there are no restrictions on the time of day, or day of the week that someone can have a fire. Generally speaking if you live in a domestic property and are burning domestic or garden waste then you can have a fire whenever you like."

I for one would have to go indoors and close all the windows because of my respiratory problems.

That's not a moan, that's a justifiable complaint. How inconsiderate and ignorant are those people. I bet they would be the first to complain if you did it (not that you would) when their washing was out. They need to learn some manners. x

I’m not that nasty as I keep myself to myself just get on with my day, I have a lot of on going health issues but I wouldn’t dare have a fire without telling them.. maybe I should send them a laundry bill 🤔🤔x

There is a fine of up to £5,000 For having a bonfire during lockdown as it’s considered inconsiderate to neighbours.

You’re not the only one who finds it offensive as so many people on social media have complained about the same thing.

Here are a local councils guidelines so check where you are...

The council guidelines were as follows:

Do not light a bonfire before 8pm and extinguish it by 10pm

Do not light a bonfire if a neighbour is using or is likely to use the garden

Do not light a bonfire if there is washing on a neighbours’ line

Do not light a bonfire if neighbours' windows are left open

Do not light a bonfire if the weather is wet, windy or misty.

Do not burn wet material

Thank you so much for the info I shall inform them.. I just can’t understand why you wouldn’t let neighbours know beforehand

Agoodenough profile image

They didn’t want you to say no probably and now it’s too late. Bit selfish really. Check on line what your local council guidelines are 🙂💚🌈

I wouldn’t of been happy about it but would’ve of said that it’s fine after 6 pm

Our local council permits bonfires betweem 6-8pm weekdays, it would be polite to let your immediate neighbours know, sadly my next door neighbours are not considerate..... they have a bbq going and sharing a hot tub as I type!

Pixie74 profile image
Pixie74 in reply toVeteran250

I think it’s so unfair while we have to be careful due health issues and others take no notice of the rules..

Davegt profile image
Davegt in reply toAgoodenough

But that is NOT everywhere. It depends on individual Local Authorities.

I don't think the fire or barbecue are necessarily wrong, but what is wrong is the lack of consideration for neighbours in not warning you it was going to happen, particularly if you had washing out already!

That’s what annoyed me more than anything, I don’t have an issue at all with bbq (apart from I wasn’t invited)🤭😂... the bonfire was quite big and black flumes of smoke x

So thoughtless Pixie74..... grrrrr! 👎

A good reason to avoid close neighbors which is not always possible.

People are going to do what they want regardless of how their actions affect others.

It would be nice if we all considered that.

I agree with you; it is inconsiderate to just have a bbq when folk have washing out. A little thought would have made them aware that it is common courtesy to let folk know beforehand, or even a day ahead, so the washing would not go out on that day.

I do not blame you for being miffed.

Perhaps a quiet word with them before the next event?

Cheers, Midori

I’m all for people enjoying the sun having bbqs and that but annoyed with no consideration about bonfires

Midori profile image
MidoriVisually impaired

Another thing right now that annoys me is people using portable bbqs out in the country directly on the grass, then not putting them out and abandoning them. This is the reason for several of the Wildfires at present.

Pixie74 profile image
Pixie74 in reply toMidori

I totally agree, it’s been made clear not to use portable bbqs, yet people ignore it.. where I live they’ve left the beaches full of rubbish remnants of bbqs it’s disgusting so lazy as well, all you need to do is put your rubbish in a bag and take it home with you 😡😡
