Hi, what you could do is phone the physiotherapy department reception, they are closed for clinics but some receptions are operating on skeleton staff. They have booklets with shoulder exercises for this very problem. They could post them to you if you asked. It's worth a try. I have OA in my shoulders and Fibro so I can appreciate the pain your in. Good luck. x

Osteopathy might cure it - or stretches and exercises that the physio might give you.

If it is a spinal problem, the physio should be able to tell which vertebra is out of position - and give you stretches and or exercises to fix it (or fix it with manipulation).

After a skiing fall, half my hand was numb until a chiropractor fixed it.

I do flexes, extensions and twists fo all sections of my spine every day - and I have not had to go to the osteopathy (nearly as often).

Please report back after your physio appointment.

My osteopath is in Oxford - are you anywhere near?

Papa....... I used to suffer arthritic pain 24/7 in both knees going on for seventeen years, until someone suggested I use ....Masons Dog Oil..... yes, you read it right.

It comes in 100g pots, purchase it on eBay or Holland &Barrett in the Uk.

It comes in vaseline type substance, and is perfume free.

I rub it into both knees before bed, and I sleep through the night, pain free..... hoping this helps!

I twicw had 2 1/2 years of shoulder pain. The worst pain thete is. First was sorted by a spinal epidural after eventually having an MRI scan showing nerve trapped at top of spine. Again after grabbing a dog by its collar to stop it running on to the road there was impingement. Sent round all the pain and muscoloskeleton depts I was eventually sent to shoulder surgeon who gave me an injection. Magic! After 3 years the pain is still gone. Pain was always at night. Persist with getting investigation and treatment. Good luck,

I had severe neuropathy pain after chemo. I saw an OT at MD Anderson. Then my left rotator cuff tore from the chemo I had. I had OT and finally IR at MD Anderson. Was on Motrin 800 and at times Norco for the pain.

You really need to speak with your GP to get a diagnosis. It could be polymyalgia. My mum has osteoarthritis and a few years ago she was getting a lot of pain in her shoulder. She was diagnosed with polymyalgia and is on a low dose of oral steroids.

You’ve waited too long, You should have seen a doctor after a couple of weeks of Pain. It sounds like you’re Rotary cup? Stop using medication it’s a bandaid fix. I worked in a manufacturing job for 32 years. Had many friends have this problem because of repetition type work. Surgery is the only solution, some had Cortizone shots a temporary fix or didn’t work. See a doctor ASAP

Hi papakebo75-Could it be Bursitis ? GP's will tell you there is an injection for that-(thats if it is Bursitis)-otherwise osteo arthritis / anxiety-due to present Virus situation! Hope you'll feel better soon!

A scan when this is all over will show what’s going on. Bursitis or bone spurs, torn tissue are a few causes. I’ve had all 3 and 2 operations and all good now so hang on in there and just don’t over do things until after treatment depending on what it actually is. Many people got health issues currently unfortunately which are not classified as emergency which in one way need to be thankful for not being emergency especially when you read other posts of people’s loved ones passing. That’s meant to be a positive not a negative. Just know it won’t be forever.

If you have had singles it can cause shoulder pain and some by getting into the nerve ends

robert1957 profile image

Sorry shingles

Well first you should see a dr. next it be bone on bone arthritis. But what I’m really thinking of it is bursitis, that usually happens in both shoulders. I had it, my husband had it. What we did is you get some castor oil rub on shoulders, then put a heating pad on them one side at a time, about low or medium heat, but be careful you have a cloth, or a covering for the heating pad, so you don’t want to burn your shoulders. It relaxes the muscles . I only had it once, but my husband has had it several times.you can buy castor oil at the drug, I don’t know about the grocery store, If that doesn’t work go see the dr, please !

I've had shoulder bursitis, worst pain ever. The gp unable to diagnose, and gave me tramadol (which I turned out to be a hyper-mobiliser of, badly affected breathing).

So I saw a private physio, immediate diagnosis, later confirmed by a scan. Treatment : keep it still with a sling, several times a day, put on ice pack, ie frozen peas, til skin pink, and rub in arnica cream.

It was on the mend within hours. Worth a try.

I was in hospital for 5 months following complications from a brain tumour removal, When I got home I had very bad left shoulder pain which would wake me at night if I turned on it. I went to the drs, he referred me to MSK where I was given excercises to do. Took about 3 months to clear but am shoulder pain free now

Hi, if the tramadol isnt working maybe see if your GP can give you something for nerve pain incase that's what is causing it. I had the most painful shoulder pain that ran down my arm and prescription codeine wasnt even touching sides so saw GP who gave me something specifically for nerve pain and it helped and followed by physio shoulder better.

Good luck and hope you get something to help.

Hi papakebo,

I’m normally hesitant to offer advise that is not medically based but I feel the need to share this, as crazy as it sounds. Several years ago I was at a club enjoying a few adult beverages with an old friend of mine and a couple of other buddies. My older friend told us that he had terrible pain in one of his shoulders and was complaining to another friend about it. He was advised to put WD-40 on it before going to bed at night for a week or so and he swore the pain went away. At the time I had a knee that hurt like the dickens so I thought I’d give it a try myself and I’m happy to report it went away and has not returned.

If you check the ingredients of WD -40 a main component is fish oil so it lends some possible credibility to the story. At any rate it’s worth a try if you can get used to the smell! Who knows maybe someone else has had a similar experience?

Good luck!!

I've had shoulder pain at night for years.

I've tried orthopedic pillows of different shapes and sizes but they didn't help.

In the end, a new soft mattress helped a bit, along with a V shaped pillow, I think they're called pregnancy pillows or something like that. They are long and V shaped.

Anyhow, my shoulder pain comes and goes even with the pillow and new mattress, it was quite painful this morning.

I sleep on my right hand side and I get the pain in my right shoulder.

I wish I could offer more help.

I had shoulder pain for several months, couldn't sleep on that side. During the lockdown I have started to do Tai Chi exercises and believe it or not but the pain has gone, although still a bit tender to touch! Tai Chi is very gentle and there are plenty of videos on YouTube for beginners.

Hi papakaebo75, It's so tough to be in so much pain. I guess you've had some kind of diagnosis as you are on heavy duty analgesia. I'd also guess there's not much in the way of medication you could add to that. Have you discussed the possibility of steroid injections into the joint, as this is very helpful in some cases.

Otherwise I could only say trying to sleep propped up on pillows and not lying on your side. Keeping the pressure off your shoulder joints might prevent you from waking in pain during the night, so much. I do hope you find some relief soon.

Hi, as most osteopath clinics are shut or operating very limited services I found this: The Living Centre Clinic based in Raynes Park offer online sessions for supervised self-help. They also do regular facebook meetings. I think you can join those when you join their Facebook group.

Bear in mind: you may suppress pain with pills but this may aggravate the underlying damage.

I get this. When it's really bad, it seems to be linked to my neck and back of head pain. At the moment, I am dizzy when I move my head sharply when lying down, and the room spins for a short while when I sit up. This is day 3. The night before this started I was on the phone to my friend. She kept calling, I was eating, and in the end I picked up the phone and cradled it between my ear and left shoulder, intending to talk for only a few seconds to say I'd call her back. This didn't pan out and I was on the phone for a lot longer in that position.

That night, I woke up for a pee and the room was spinning. It's not quite as bad today, but I had the same thing last September and it took a good week to go away. I believe it is vagus nerve impingement. Stretching makes it worse for me.

Other times I get a prickly sensation on the back of my head and twinges of pain in my shoulder - usually the right, but not always - and between my shoulders.

I recently discovered oxalates and the damage these needle-like structures can do when you eat a lot of them. I was eating them by the ton - they are very high in the plant foods I like most, like dark chocolate, sweet potatoes, carrots, almonds, etc.

Anyway, 8 weeks ago I began to lower the amount of oxalates in my diet. I started to feel a bit better by days 3. THEN, after 3 1/2 weeks (and in a hurry, as usual) I ditched them altogether and went carnivore.

The oxalate dumping hit me like a speeding train. Aches and pains in muscles and joints, headaches, itchy skin, aching teeth, dry, scratchy eyes, and burning, frequent pee. I tried to ride it out, but when this latest neck/shoulder pain hit, I decided I needed to slow the rate of dumping down.

I've added a bit of stevia to my coffee, and started eating 2 pieces of very dark chocolate a day. The relief with the urgency and burning pee was very fast, and by the next day (today) my teeth stopped hurting and my skin is a lot less itchy. The aches and pains in my muscles and joints are subsiding. My lower back pain disappeared to a huge degree, too.

This is seriously damaging stuff and they reckon could be the cause of or have a major impact on fibro and inflammatory conditions. This first kicked in when I went vegan just over a year ago. More recently, as I tried to raise my ferritin levels, I found that turmeric and oxalates in meals were blocking the uptake - that's when I discovered oxalates and the anti-nutrients in plants that block the uptake of nutrients, both in the plants (terrible bioavailability - such as the iron in spinach is largely useless to us) and with supplements we take with plants in meals. It was a real eye-opener, I must say.

Oxalates cause pain and inflammation all over the body and are just as nasty (can even be lethal) coming out. Even my veins were itchy! The painful twinges in my kidneys went within days of cutting them down in my diet (they cause certain types of kidney stones).

Perhaps it may be worth while looking at what you eat? Wheat products are high in them, too. Indeed, very few plants have low levels of oxalate, but many people can tolerate reasonable levels in their system without obvious issues, but of course they build up over time.

Plants have other nasty stuff in them that block the uptake of nutrients - salicylate, phytic acid, tannins, lectins - there's a huge list that even includes cyanid. Some plants are far worse offenders that others - sadly the yummiest ones are usually the worst offenders.

I'm tackling this in the hope it will help my thyroid. Oxalates lodge in the thyroid gland and wreak havoc and can also lead to leaky gut (which I've also had).

It may well be worth reading up on to see if you have any of the symptoms (I had loads). If it's oxalate-related, you will get some relief fairly quickly. But reduce them slowly - oxalate dumping is no fun, as I've just discovered to my detriment.

And good luck.

Ask for an Ultrasound scan of your shoulder.

I had symptoms like you and my GP referred me to have an Ultrasound which showed a full thickness tear in my right shoulder and was referred to the Orthopaedic department at my local hospital who carried out surgery (rotor cuff repair) 16 weeks ago....

Also had Ultrasound on my left shoulder due to pain and discomfort and have a full thickness tear there as well....

I have been like this for two years now.

Polypoly profile image

I am so sorry to read of your ongoing pains.

It must be awful for you. 🌷

I instantly recognised my 25 years (Phew!) of PMR were very similar to your own journey Cherry - Hips then Shoulders.

I had a Rheumy for a while at the start, with X Rays and then several sessions of steroid shoulder injections, giving me prompt relief but short lived only sadly.

My Sed rate bloods were normal?! -

So confusing the diagnosis.

(CRP level was not initially tested then), but was only slightly raised when tested for 15 years later.... another indicator of possible PMR I was told.

But my Prednisolone response was very good and so was used by my Rheumy in a letter to my Doc as his reason to be PMR.

I still wonder about that even today, as in my job 25 years ago I often installed very heavy massive Bronze or Crystal Chandeliers, needing two guys to lift these beautiful objects (costing sometimes around £12,000) out of a crate even.

The following ‘Delboy installation’ then adding lots of ‘above the head‘ arm strains and Bed lifting in the rooms above the installation room to install metal supports.

After the Rheumy said he could do no more for me (a shock as a working guy aged about 50), he put me on Prednisolone.

I was then sent back to my doctor and since have gone up and down in 18 month cycles of pain and relief using and reducing pred gradually.

But I never managed to end the Pred for very long! - from 15mg tops dose reducing downwards to stopping for no more than two months before needing another 18 months of 15mg and back down again.

So eventually my GP suggested a continuous low dose, so I’m now on just a continuously running 2.5mg pred dose, but putting up with the enduring one shoulder/ Bicep pain as it’s bearable. - Just!

It only hurts me when reaching out or up!

Its just my right shoulder and bicep which are really weak now, (it has moved around and hurt my Left shoulder and Bicep at other flares!).

So now to reach for a tea cup just 18 inches away is a challenge! - I often think I’ll not take! - and so lean across with my left arm to lift the brown Tonic!

It’s painful to move it in any slight upward way, - but when still I have no pain at all ?!?

I never take pain killers as I don’t believe they will help, but only chemically hinder!

That’s my tale for you Cherry, you are not alone in this quandary, I do sincerely hope you will recover and find the answers you need.

My answer did not arrive for me, - but here in this sympathetic group of people (often with more massive problems than our nasty shoulder will ever be).

I hope you find good comfort and solace here Cherry, while sharing thoughts and your own ideas on treatment when you do find your own theories to tell us about

I hope papakebo75 picks up my clues too.

Please be lucky, both of you x S.

Hello papakebo75

If you can make an appointment to see a orthopaedic doctor/surgeon to do an MRI scan of both shoulders.

Short term try to have a steroid injection in both shoulders. That should help short term.

I have had both shoulder joints replaced. The pain is really excruciating, l am feeling for you!

Simonpete profile image

It may be an impingement, especially if you have difficulty raising your arm. See your doctor, get it X-rayed, and if the pain is unbearable you can get a steroid injection which stops the pain for a few months. Impingements can also disappear of their own accord.

I'd say ring your Dr may be able to get you in for x-ray, ultrasound or MRI to see what going on and get you physio once re opens.
