Do any members suffer from tinnitus. I seem to have developed this condition recently in my left ear. It does not bother me too much and seems to come and go. It came on this morning after I had taken my prednisolone. I wonder if the drug could be the cause.

Sometimes I get a ringing in my ears which can go on for some time although it's not present 24/7. Not sure of the cause and it hasn't bothered me enough to mention it to the medics.

Dear GreyOwl,

After reading your most resent post, I feel honoured that you have the time to concern yourself with my small problem. Thankyou so much. I wish, with all of my heart that I could offer advice to you which would give you real comfort. All I can do is try to feel some of your pain and , because I can empathise with you over the potential homeless situation, I say this - 25 years ago, I was left alone in a rented flat in a 32 roomed mansion being hounded by a landlord who wanted rid of me because he wanted to sell the property to a buyer who wished to turn this large house into a care home. All of the other tenents of the house had left because the landlord had made it as difficult as he could for them to live there. I, at the time, was a single parent of an 18 month old child and had nowhere to go. This man even began to demolish part of the house, part of which I rented. Then he had his men remove my back door which left my child and me unprotected, particularly at night. There were many other instances of his heartless behaviour to us, but, because my back was to the wall, I had nothing else to do but fight, and boy, I did. I sought legal advice and, after about a year, I won. It nearly cost me my sanity, but, from a standpoint of nil against he who seemed to hold all the cards, I beat him.

I understand that our problems are and were very different, but the similarities are rooted in what we share now, and injustices of the past for me and the present for you.

I hope you have family/friends to help you get through all this. As you and I know, stress and illness are not good bed fellows. It must be so hard for you. I send you my heartfelt best wishes,

Pats.

Did your tinnitus start before your recent nasty infection? I ask because I have some deafness and tinnitus in one ear which predates PMR and pred by many years. At the time the medics said that it was likely to be the result of damage caused by a series of nasty infections which struck my ears, nose, throat and respiratory tract. It gets worse if I have an infection, hay fever or in a noisy environment. I do not think that either the Pred or the PMR has made any difference to it however I am not a medical expert and it might be worth a word with your GP.

Hope that it does not bother you too much. I have learned to live with mine which thankfully is slight. We sufferers have enough to cope with PMR on its own without all these other problems.

Hi Pat,

I first noticed the ringing sound in my left ear after my dose of pred was increased in late october last year. 30mg from 10mg. I have suffered from seasonal allergies for most of my adult life, but I don't think they are the cause of this.

This morning I had no tinnitus when I got up. I had my breakfast and took 9.5mg of pred. 10 minutes later the tinnitus returned. Having looked on the Net for answers I have come across lots of information regarding this condition and prednisolone figures quite high as a potential culpret as does ibuprofen which I also take sometimes. However, a build up of ear wax can also cause tinnitus, and I have noticed a change in my ears since taking pred. They produce much less wax and it is much dryer, but that effect is in both ears and I only get the ringing in one.

As I have said, the sounds go after a while so I am not much bothered by them. Just one more irritation.

Pat,

I do not think that seasonal allergies would cause this. The infections which I had were very bad with severe dizziness because of problems with my balance mechanism. If you had an infection like that you would know all about it and be unable to move from your bed for a while. In your case there must be another cause. As I started out on 15mg pred I have been on a much lower dose of pred than you so my case does not really help you. Sorry.

I have had tinnitus for the past 20 years and it has gradually become more of a problem. I was diagnosed with Lupus about 10 years ago and take methotrexate, plaquenil and sometimes prednisilone. I cannot pinpoint what is the cause as I have kept a complete diary of habits, eating times, sleeping times, diet etc etc. None of which has enlightened me. At times its really debilitating as in I am unable to communicate or watch tv as the sound is so powerful. At other times there is nothing. Im not sure how this info is going to help but I do find having music on the background helps and have surf sounds in my pillow which does help. I really do hope it improves. For me its a way of life. I have been discharged from the hospital after various X-rays scans etc so I am just having to live with it. I truly emphasise with you
