I have been on pred for 19 months. Have reduced (instructed by rheumatologist) from 10 to 9 to 8 in the last month. I have been taking 8x2.5gr methotrexate for ten weeks.
For sure some of my pain has come back in the last few days but I am prepared to tolerate it and see what happens.

Are you saying you have reduced 2mg within the period of a month. Bit quick even with MTX, so maybe 1mg every month - longer if necessary. As you get lower on Pred, you really need to slow down the tapers.
It’s okay to say, you are prepared to put up with some pain, but just be mindful, “some” pain can very easily become more pain, and then result in a flare.
It isn't really a case of "tolerating" a bit of pain. Once you get to a dose that is too low to deal with all the inflammation created, then that leftover inflammation starts to build up, like a dripping tap fills a bucket sooner or later and overflows. Left to itself, that inflammation may build up to the level it was before and causing symptoms again. If you catch it now, it may mean just a bit longer at the previous dose. Leave it and you may end up back at the beginning again. And no-one wants that!
And please, can I ask that your title refers to what you are posting about - it is what people look at to decide whether to read a post or not and also it helps trigger the Related Posts when others have posted about something similar before.
why tolerate pain when there’s a medication to relieve it and enable you to live your life? You’re doing well; Keep going at a gentle pace that suits you not your medics.
