Hi all

I have been on Pred since March 2024 started at 15 now at 9mg just had my 1st Dexa scan results are Ostiopenis but have not yet been given the T number (results arrived in a text whilst on holiday) my question is is there an alternative natural way of increasing bone density rather than taking AA

Thanks in advance

Oodles of information under bone health in the FAQs -

.. do you mean osteopenia or osteoporosis?

the ROS site is also very good for info -

theros.org.uk

It very much depends where on the scale of osteopenia you are. If you are towards the end that merges into normal, yes, probably AA is not yet necessary, calcium and vit D and exercise may well be enough.

If, on the other hand, you are at the other end, which merges into osteoporosis, it may be too late for "just" calcium and vit D to maintain the status quo and something more may be required. And without knowing your t-scores, it isn't possible to comment further.

Hi I received a diagnosis of Osteoporosis from results of Dexa scan and was surprised Lumbar T Score -2.2 .Femoral Neck T Score -2.8 moderate to left hip moderate to sever osteoarthritis . First thing I did I went to a nutrionist and am currently following a regime to reduce inflammation and build bone density - This has resulted in a drop of weight of over a stone I am an experienced yoga teacher so I went to work researching what was happening in the yoga world around osteoporosis from my research in the yoga world Osteoporosis is reversible for many folk . Am on trampoline every second day for 10 mins - teach yoga 3 times a week and have added in specially adapted exercises in my yoga teaching and routine to promote bone and muscle strength . Walking dog x3/4 times a week for an hour plus in hilly area with a weighted vest , also have joined the local gym and go to two weights classes twice a week .. Am also going to go on HRT ( am 65 years old)If I can find a doctor to prescribe it I am currently at 8mg and fingers crossed no flare up......

Diet is anti inflammatory- plus low/no carb , no alcohol , no coffee/tea,low/no salt . Gym regime is twice a week initially with a coach now just attend a class , low weights , balance , skipping .

I went straight onto a Rebounder (mini trampoline) as soon as I was put on 60 pred. My diet is high in cheese and other dairy and the girl who did the first Dexa scan said ice cream! I love my ice cream so an excuse to eat it was welcome although the sugar content isn't good. I was also recommended to take Boron at 30 mcg daily - increasing slowly. My second Dexa scan several years on was "normal". Unfortunately Boron isn't easy to come by in those numbers here so luckily my son lives in the US and sends it to me. I passed on the AAcid and it seems I have done enough. I am not great at walking as my knees aren't good and I have had a hip replacement a couple of years ago.

Thanks for that I have found Boron supplements at 3 and 5 mg so do you mean 30mg and when you say increase slowly what was your regime?

I started on 15mg and stayed there for a couple of weeks and then went up to 30mg. I take Boron at breakfast slightly before the prednisolone. It seems controversial in this country but you can get it in larger amounts in the US. I have been using it for at least 6 years and the fact that my Dexa scan was good after all the pred seems to bare out what my advice was back then. The advice was from a retired nurse with experience of prednisolone.

Difficult to say though - my dexascan was basically unchanged after 13 years on pred and other than calcium and vit D I took nothing else.
