hi. My mom (F, 80) has had diagnosed PMR for about 4 years. She’s been able to taper to a pretty low dose of prednisone-but this last flare was bad. I’m wondering if any of you have tried the diabetic/weight loss drugs that are out now, and if they have had any effect on your PMR?

Besides reducing A1C, there are other benefits, specifically reducing inflammation. I know the drugs are new, so just wondering if anyone had any experience to share. Thanks in advance.

I haven’t tried them and I would not take them.

At the moment the drugs are in short supply for people who really need them, the type 2 diabetics. I would not want to be part of the problem for diabetics not able to get them. That is my opinion and prednisolone is working well for me

The fad for using them for obesity is either for the rich or the USA. The NHS won't be handing them out in the foreseeable future! But I'm not sure they will work to reduce the Hba1c when the problem is due to being on steroids. You can achieve the same effect by cutting carbs in your diet. Nothing wrong with employing a bit of willpower! And since they are meant for diabetics and there is now a shortage because of people seeing them as an easy way to lose weight, the people who really need them are struggling.

My thoughts exactly. Thank you for putting it so well.

Others have replied re drugs, but if your mom is flaring regularly the she is obviously reducing too quickly.

She might like to follow this advice - should it happen again -

Better still follow a slow tapering plan - she here for examples - and leave the drugs mentioned to those who genuinely rely on them -
