singing low and lax vox

A while ago I asked you all about “ hoarse voice when singing low” and prednison.

Many replies thank you all again.

My GP referred me to a throat nose and ear specialist who did a few tests and decided my vocal folds worked OK and there was no sign of anything nasty. He did nt think steroids had any effect on my throat either and it had to do with :” old age”…

That was a relieve. He asked me if I wanted to be referred to a speak language therapist. Yes, fine, great. Good move! I want to sing low.

The therapist decided that the old folds ( 71 yr old me) did nt close properly and that is why. She put me on a method that worked fantastic and had surprising results, for me anyway….

it is called “ lax voice” / bubbelen…

You get an empty like small cola ( or so) bottle , a wide straw, fill the bottle about 5 cm with water. Straw in yr mouth: breath in and breath out in the water, which is against resistance. Heaps of repetitions every day.

The amount of phlegm that came out of somewhere in my head, chest or wherever else was phenomenal. Gradually this is going and with that the voice has improved above anybodies expectation. Yes, I had a “ bad cold” months before.

If you are interested you must look it up on utube. It is all there for you to try if you have a hoarse voice. Like me it might not have anything to do with not enough or too much use of steroids after all.

One of those happy outcomes that we need! Happy bubbling…..

Excellent! Who would have thought a straw and a drop of water could produce those results? The specialist has very likely saved you ££££££££.

I remember doing similar when I was a kid with a straw and orange squash and being told off. I am allowed to do it now, it is official.

vocal therapists are a blessing to a singer! Keep it up. I’m sure it’s strengthen your diaphragm which is what every good teacher should work on with their students. Glad to hear you are going to do what you love!

I lost my singing voice several years ago after a bout of chronic bronchitis and several bouts of laryngospasm, which is terrifying. As a semi-professional singer I was devastated at the loss of voice.. I was referred to a speech & language therapist who showed me that bubble technique and said I should do it several times every day.

It really works and I can sing again.

I thank her from the bottom of my heart every time I sing.

Halley,

Thank you for yr reply.

Yesterday I went back to her and told her how I got rid of a lot of coloured phlegm etc. By breathing deep and full filing the entire lungs…

she advised me then now to go for smaller volume of air and softly breath out , evenly to work on the voice. And yes so glad you had similar experience and are back to singing with joy..

i was also recommended to do “sirening”; that is pretending to be a fire engine or ambulance - keep your mouth closed and do quiet swoops with your voice.

It helped a lot too.

Good luck with your vocal journey.
