I was down to 6mgs. of methyprednisolone when my cataract was getting to the point that I couldn’t drive any longer, because the vision in my other eye is 20/200 and cannot be corrected, so I had cataract surgery two days ago. I woke up this morning to not being able to turn my head, and then a short time later, my hips became involved. Emotionally I also felt “drained”. I immediately doubled my dose of methyprednisolone. My question is this enough to control what happened, and should I stay at this level for a couple of days and then try reducing back down to 6mgs., or what?

Did anyone give you cover with hydrocortisone during the surgery. It is quite stressful - and could also very well be enough to poke the PMR, all sorts of things will do that,
I’d contact your GP or rheumatologist for advice - but on the whole agree with PMRpro, the op could well be enough to produce this effect and I would have thought you’d have had cover provided.
Oh, and I’ll be especially interested in replies as I have cataract surgery coming up in late October/early November
I had a cataract done this Monday 20th. I'm on 8mg Pred. The surgeon was aware but not bothered about it. The op went without a hitch, no after effects bar the obvious ones and no flares. Best of luck with yours x
Hi Sandralinks, it’s not quite the same but I had hip surgery some months ago, on 5mgm pred. My gp said leave it to ‘them’ but they did nothing. Third day post op I started with the familiar pmr pains. I doubled to 10, then 9,8,7, 6 each day then back to 5, That nipped it in the bud & all ok after that. Everyone’s different of course but it worked for me.
Hi, I recently had surgery and initially I was told I didn’t need to increase my pred, however, it was blatantly obvious after surgery I needed urgently to double up my dose, I was advised to increase it for 5 days and then revert back to normal dose.
It’s beyond me why this is not an automatic prescription for anyone having surgery.
Hi, My mother too had just underwent laser cataract surgery to remove a cataract from her right eye. The right eye prescription was -7.5, which was a poor one since she was losing hope because her right eye had nearly gone blind. A laser from a nearby clinic ( avantlasikspa.com/ ) was used to make the incision and rebuild the cornea. She was first advised she didn't need to raise her pred after the procedure, but when she began to have difficulties, she doubled her dose for four days and then returned to normal. Her eyesight improved in a matter of weeks, and she was able to see clearly again.
I have had two previous surgery’s and always had a booster dose but this was given under anaesthetic by the anaesthetist. I am having cataract surgery on Wednesday and I asked but was told it wasn’t necessary for this procedure. I still think any surgery is perceived by our bodies as an assault so I am not going to do my taper and will give myself a booster if necessary. I did wonder if you had stiffened up because of nervousness about damaging your eye during sleep. I hope you feel better soon. You didn’t say if the op had been a success, hope so 💕
I had both eyes done within 2 months last spring and continued my steady taper without any problems. Every step of the way is very much an individual thing with pred!
