Does PMR affect the temp control centre in my body?

Hi everyone. I hope you are managing to keep cool. I have never liked the heat, but since I have had PMR, I have found that this heatwave is making me feel quite ill, difficulty in doing usual tasks and so hot. The only place I feel comfortable is in the lounge with my feet up in front of the fan! Any thoughts?

It was exceptionally hot 🥵 yesterday, we have a very sunny garden & it was hard to find shade. We had our 3year old grandaughter too, we ended up after lunch in our bedroom under the fan it was too hot everywhere else. Try a cold flannel or one of those filled scarves that absorbs water around your neck. Drink plenty of water & just relax l think everyone found yesterday difficult!

Disturbed body temperature regulation is a common feature in a lot of a utoimmune conditions and I suspect pred doesn't help either if you are someone who gets hot sweats from pred - or at least. it makes you FEEL worse. In fact, it is probably protecting you from developing heatstroke by sweating keeping body temp down!

The British do get their behaviour for such high temperatures totally wrong - there is a good reason for the long midday breaks in southern Europe, you keep out of the heat! It is very unusual to see office workers sitting in the park in the midday sun - unless it is the local open air swimming pool. That's why we also have small windows, well insulated walls - and external blinds on larger windows. We air the house in the early morning - and when the outside and inside temperatures are the same, the doors and windows are closed and curtains drawn to stop internal temperatures rising too far. Then having a fan on helps it feel cooler - but not allowing outside air in.

I try to go out before it gets to peak temp - but I choose my path carefully so as much as possible is in the shade. Being in full sun can add 10C to the perceived temp.

Thank you so much. That is such a help to know I am not alone in this heat! And also why it happens.

Amazingly I learnt a small tip that really seems to help me. Rinse your wrists under the cold water tap for a short while. Really cools you down.

Yes it does work. Do it for at least 2 minutes.

yes, and also fill a bowl with cold water for a foot and ankle soak!

I’ve done that since I was young. I think it’s based on the fact that you are cooking down some veins that are near the surface of the skin...I was told it needs to be insides of wrist and go for a good five minutes. Hope this helps others, thanks for the reminder, Kendrew! S x

My mum taught me that and it definitely works. 😁

My grandparents used to do that back in the 1920's; my mother passed it on to me. It really does help!

I put damp tea towels over the fans.

Or a bowl of ice cubes, placed in front of a fan.

Don’t worry it is supposed to be getting cooler. It is worth while investing in a fan or some sort of cooler though.

I fill my hot water bottle with cod water ,then put it in the freezer. Cover it with a small towel , and it’s bliss

Yes. I sometimes feel a block of ice. Also, wake up at night very hot - although air con set at 68.

That puts it in a nutshell! My thermostat has definitely gone wrong and unfortunately a plumber can’t help! Thank goodness for fans and help from my forum friends!
