This has definitely been discussed. Worth a search.

I had Baker’s cyst before PMR intermittently, also had it since PMR diagnosis. No longer have it since my total knee replacement a year and a bit ago.

I rather think it can be a a problem when the knee is struggling with osteo arthritis. And a lot of PMR sufferers also have knee arthritis, simply cos we are all getting on a bit! Sadly!

I’ve had bakers cysts in both knees over the past two years. Both caused by PMR. X Rays and MRIs showed synovitis but no OA. My knees were pretty good for age and stage. (I’m 60 and have been a squash player for forty of those although now retired!)

Rheumatologist continues to be confused why my knees flare up and they do it separately not together. No sooner than left knee settled a few weeks later right knee flared. Left knee now great but right knee started mid March!

Have had PMR for four years and currently around 7mg. So unfortunately I have no idea and have just struggled along. Very frustrating.

Maybe it is because you weight bear differently on the bad knee during a flare, then the other gets upset once the bad knee is now a good knee. If you see what I mean?

Yes I do but it’s quite amazing the speed at which the right knee deteriorated! Back to the same old quandary, do I increase my steroid dose by a few mg to try and reduce the bakers cyst and relieve the pressure on my knee. As before, the rest of me is doing well, it’s just one knee that’s seriously irritating me hence the reluctance to increase the steroid dose. I did get a steroid injection in my knee three weeks ago and it’s not made any difference. It wasn’t done by my rheumatologist but by one of her junior doctors and I feel as if he missed my joint totally if that’s possible?!!

It's a bloody nuisance lovely walking the dog but when it's bad I can manage only 15mins usually its 2/3 hrs ( well before lock down it was)

My dog walking is on hold at the moment as it definitely aggravates it. 😰

My knees have flared up separately in the last few years. Very sore , hot and swollen .

Does that sound similar?

The cause was pseudogout.

I’ve asked about pseudo gout and they say no! Hasn’t shown up on any xrays or MRI.

How do they know?

They had taken fluid off left knee when it was a problem and test came back with xxx inflammation. I kept asking about pseudo gout but they said no. Couldn’t get any fluid off my right knee the other week so nothing tested. I’m back at rheumatology mid June so May pursue this again. Fingers crossed the appointment happens!

As long as they looked for crystals ...

The test they did on my knee was to remove some of the fluid and test it. The test was positive for calcium phosphate crystals.

I developed a Baker’s Cyst after a year of PMR but it hasn’t caused me any problems, I tend to forget about it now. Doctor said it should eventually go on it own. I do have arthritis in my knees which flares up sometimes, especially if I get on my knees to scrub anything!
