Still concerned about statins

I know this has been talked about quite recently but........!

My cholesterol levels were 364, the doctor put me on statins about 2 years ago. I have never had a heart problem and most of you seem to say "you don't really need statins if there are no other symptoms of heart strain". I then decided to half my statin intake. I recently just stopped them. What would others do? Wise or stupid?!?

I have always refused statins

I would not have started taking them in the first place unless I was given a very good reason to take them. Read the Great Cholesterol Con by Dr Kendrick. A real eye opener and an easy and amusing read.

My doctor insisted because I had very high blood pressure (230/160) and very high cholesterol (364).

Never really had it checked thoroughly because, after I started the BP tablets, my BP settled into "normal" levels and I didn't feel ill or anything. Once on steroids my BP was fine, only the cholesterol stayed high.

Hello Constance,

There was a regular weekly radio programme here with a well known cardiologist. He always said he would never prescribe fat soluble statins only water soluble ones. He would also send patients for a coronary calcium scan and if that was low they didn’t need statins. He also recommended a product called Bergamet. I presume it contains bergamot. I looked it up and it was quite expensive so decided to just increase my Earl Grey tea intake. I don’t have a heart condition but your post reminded me of his words. Take care - Marea 🌻

Another thought, I have also regularly come across information stating those on statins should also be taking co-enzyme Q10.

Especially from sources with a financial interest in selling it maybe?

I'm certainly not going to start "this and that". I want to get rid of pills, not add to them.

Thanks Marea - worth looking into. 🌸

My husband was prescribed a statin 6 years ago because a scan showed he had a little plaque in his arteries, never had his Cholesterol tested. Over the two years he took them he suffered muscle pain and lost 2 stone in weight ( I nagged him to go to the Dr. but ignored me

I spent two years telling him it as down to the statins . He weight loss wasn’t good as he lost muscle . Eventually he decided not to take them for a week and the pains went away, started them again and the pain came back. Finally went to see the Doctor , he is now registered a Statin Failure.

He recently decided to get his arteries scanned again after six years, there is no change, still nothing concerning. He is 81 years healthy and takes no prescription drugs at all.

I have a friend , she is very petite, eats a healthy diet and is active. Her cholesterol is high and has been prescribed statins which she refuses to take. Her high cholesterol is familial, her Mum had it too. Her Mum lived to 94 and died of lung cancer.

I think a lot of people are given statins, so many of the people in my circle are on statins Dr’s seem to over prescribe , (my opinion.)To begin with they were only prescribed to people with high readings .

Oats and six walnuts a day is the answer 🙂

Sorry for my ramblings but my arm is allowing me to use it normally today , hope it lasts.

Best wishes.
