The yoghurt has always worked for me. The Omeprazole that I was prescribed automatically gave me stomach pain.

Many people are given a type called a proton pump inhibitor such as Omeprazole. There is another antihistamine type such as Ranitidine. Some are fine with them and some aren’t, so it is worth trying one. I didn’t get on with either (intestinal effects mainly) and taking Pred with food didn’t help me especially at high doses. I ended up on coated Pred plus a bit of Gaviscon. We’re all different so you need to try and see how you get on.

See what a responsive group this is? I've been on Dexilant for years because of ulcer history, a prescription, and when I was prescribed asprin I was prescribed Ranitidine twice a day. Maybe you can check with your doctor....sometimes in the past if I had heartburn Pepto Bismal helped.

It hasn't been an issue with me either....hope it isn't with you. Good luck tomorrow!!! I'll be checking the computer👍👍👏

I take pantaloc. A protein pump inhibitor. Took it pre prednisone for acid reflux. Now take one in morning and one at bed. Ranitidine which I used to take in evening was recalled.

If you don't need anything, don't take anything. Food or, as you've found, yoghurt, works fine for most of us.

Long term PPIs can lead to osteoporosis.

I was started on Prilosec/omeprazole when I began 60mg of prednisone two years ago. Several times I've skipped it and taken the prednisone after a big breakfast. That would work fine for two days at a time but then I'd have to go back on it because my gut hurt. Have tried yogurt, too. Always end up back on omeprazole. The doctors tell me I can stop taking it once I'm down to 9 mg of prednisone. Currently on 16.5 mg.

Ranitidine was recalled here in the states just recently. Talk to the pharmacist: they said to throw it away. Again, that was here in the US.

Since taking Pred I take Omiprazole even though I’m down to 6.5mg and I have got on well with it. Prior to my being diagnosed with PMR I had a long history of indigestion, heartburn and reflux and was never far from the rennie and gaviscon. Even managing my diet carefully didn’t completely eliminate these problems and it was quite miserable at times. However since taking omiprazole I have been completely free of these horrible symptoms. Reading this forum, opinion seems varied about this type of medication and it’s possible long term effects. All I know is that just taking a bit of yoghurt with my pred would not solve my general acidity and reflux problems and wouldn’t work for me.

There is no hard and fast general rule that applies to all, you have to find out what works for you. For me since being diagnosed with PMR and taking Omiprazole with pred has been helpful. The one ( probably the only) upside has been the absence of all the previous digestive problems and suffering I used to get. However at some point I will have to address this as I can’t keep taking Omiprazole indefinitely, that’s a challenge I have to face.

Good luck as you work out what works for you.

GP advised me that yoghurt would not help as steroids thin the stomach lining and only Omeprazole would help with that. Fortunately I get on Ok with it and no side effects. She also said that I would need take it as long as I was on steroids but there does seem to be a difference of opinion on that. Seeing the rheumatologist today so will ask him for his opinion. Best wishes

In over 10 years of taking pred I have taken stomach protection for the grand total of a week and that was because I was being given high dose NSAIDs by infusion. Not everyone requires a PPI and it makes sense to try all the other options first - including taking your pred in the middle of a meal.

Omeprazole won't "stop the gastric lining being thinned" - it stops the glands producing acid which really isn't the same thing. And that comes with its own problems. They have their uses - but were never designed or approved for continuous use in the long term,

I was taking Omeprazole for other issues before Pred, but it didn’t work once I started taking steroids and I had a lot of pain. Dr doubled the dose, Split one am one pm, no better. He swapped me onto lansoprozole and it’s much much better. No side effects for either. Good luck!

Try this:

One lemon (unwaxed) 1 minute in microwave (more juice) divide by three and take in a little water before your meals.

Tip supplied by a PMR & GCA patient many moons ago.

Dear Libertylane,

I have always been Prescribed Omeprazole, and have been for twenty-two years....with 'little' problem👍. I know that not Everyone is this Lucky and can't 'Take' it, long term.

Omeprazole, along with ALL the 'other' drugs, does cause me 'Tummy' problems- mainly 'Wind' (gas), Stabbing pains and Constipation. However I DO seem to be, successfully 'Protected', from 'most' stomach problems.

Overall, apart from constipation (F..k, do I?), I don't seem to get Too Many 'Side Effects', if you don't 'Count' my Skin Problems and Bed Wetting- that is🤷‍♂️.

Let's be Positive......It's 2020, I'm ALIVE and so are ALL of you, so let's have a Smile people😀😄😊🙂😁😃😄😆😉, mainly 😃. Come On 'Everyone'.....as I said it's

Happy New Year, actually Decade.

Quite often you are prescribed a PPI automatically, as 'just in case' when you are given pred. Another 'just in case is 'AA', many people have no problems with pred. If and when you do run into a problem, then you need to look at taking something - either natural remedy or medicine.

I suggest that you read the side effects of all PPI's before deciding to take one.

Omeprazole has listed as a common side effect, aches and pains' . So do others. Just a thought?

I have a leaning towards natural (herbal) treatments. I was given Omeprazole, but have only been taking it as and when because of the side effects. I read recently about slippery elm bark being being good for GERD. Will give this a go when I receive it.
