Organ Donor?

Does anyone know if you can qualify to be an organ donor while on pred for GCA, or if you can be a donor after/during remission.

Certain things can probably be donated - even cancer patients in remission can donate some things!

I’m on list - before, during and after GCA/Pred.

I think you can be a potential donor. All tissue is tested before being used on any recipient. My husband had a corneal transplant a few months ago, but prior to that his op was cancelled as donor tissue tested positive for hepatitis.

What a great question , something I haven't thought about until you mentioned it.

I'm going to look up those links from Pro now , thanks so much for writing this post x

Thanks everyone for the input. Should clarify a bit, was thinking of donating kidney as live donor not post mortem. Not sure if it changes anything, also will have to check Canadian "rules" but again thanks for the interest and info to all

It might not be as straightforward in that case, is it for a family member?

I would expect it might be problematic for you - on pred to be a live kidney donor but I am sure you could ask someone. Brilliant question to ask though. My son had a terrible accident and his life was in the balance - I knew he would like to donate any parts that would be useful and he rallied enough to make sure I knew he carried the card. However what I didn't know was that his father would have had the power to veto any donations as he was listed as next of kin. We are divorced - so please everyone have the conversation with your nearest and dearest as to what your wishes are. I think we should need to "Opt Out" of donation and then many lives could be saved. I should add that he survived so that problem didn't arise.

I've approved to donate my organs. If something happens while on prednisone I figure the medical team involved in administering the donation program will figure out whether my organs are usable of not. I'm sure it will be one of many factors for them to consider. :-)
