I used the 5:2 approach first to reeducate my view of portion size - not that I had massive portions but it did curb my appetite a lot. Then I used low carb to lose 35lbs. Now I eat in a pattern that matches the 16:8 intermittent fasting approach which maintains my weight. But to lose weight while on pred, I personally have to cut carbs drastically, down to 20g per day.
Thanks - I did a search but nothing came up. I guess I'm worried about loosing muscle mass but the 5:2 is not particularly arduous and I have overweight to loose
It isn't and it is good. But when on pred, the carbs are very important too. Cutting carbs also protects against the risk of steroid-induced diabetes.
I use the 5:2 as a regular discipline. Whilst I was on high dosages of prednisolone it was difficult but when dosage was under 10mg daIly, it was not a problem.
I started on the 5:2 diet 6 years ago before PMR developed. I started on the usual 15mg when PMR first hit 5 years ago. Found going down to 10mg a day fairly easy but haven't been able to successfully get below that for any length of time. Just started on a very slow taper as recommended here and I think I'm OK on 9mg now - fingers and toes crossed. I've had no problems combining prednisolone with this diet. In fact I've just turned it into a 4:3 diet to try and keep the weight off but weight gain wasn't a problem until my dog died 6 months ago so I don't get as much excersise now. Have you had problems with it or are you contemplating starting it?
Hi.. I have done 3 x 2 days of the fast diet eg 3 weeks and the results have been dramatic.
I was concerned about losing muscle mass but not now that I know thousands of others with PMR are using the method!
I'm 16 months in and on 6.5mg pred slow tapering always in the hope of lowering the dose to nothing... sometime...
