Hi I believe people take coated tablets at night so they are ready for 3/4am when they are needed. Sorry that isn't a very detailed answer but all our "experts" are asleep now. They will be able to give you more help later this morning.

I have looked on line and the average time seems to be about 3 hours.

Thank you for your answer

Hi kaybord..it depends on whether the pred is coated or uncoated. Coated takes 4 to 6hours and uncoated about 1 to 3 I believe. People who take coated pred can take it at night just before sleep so that it kicks in by the time all the inflammation starts for the day. Some take at 2am for similar reasons. Or they can be taken on the morning. I take 5mg coated and 1mg uncoated in the morning at the moment to get some quick pred and a bit more 4 hours later.

Is there any particular reason for the question? Can we help further?

Hi Kaybord

You’ve had good answers from YBB & PD ~ coated Pred takes about four hours & uncoated about one hour, so they each have their merits depending on when you take them.

Kind Regards

Hello at higher doses with coated I found I started to vaguely feel the effects (sweats, shakes, fuzzy head) after about 2 hours but the full effect didn’t occur until 4-5 hours. Taking them on a full stomach both lengthened this time and reduced the effects so I took them away from food by at least 2 hours. Due to feeling rubbish on them I took them at 5:30pm, waited until 7:30pm to eat and then slept through the worst initial side effects later. Uncoated it took 1-2 hours.

Enteric coated tablets are designed to pass through the acid environment of the stomach with the contents and are then broken down in a different pH in the lower gut. It depends on how much food was in the stomach when you took the pred and how fast your gut works, some are slower than others. It is usually at least 3-4 hours before the outer coating disintegrates and the pred is released and sometimes more. It is said it can be between 4 and as much as 7 or even 8 hours before the blood level rises. When it does rise it rises slowly and reaches a lower peak value.

Although it's for a different condition in my case coated prednisolone normally takes 6 hours before I feel it's working
