I bought a new frying pan!

I knew that would grab your attention.

I decided I was worth it and was sick of the old non stick sticking.

Chose good quality pan and put it in my trolley.

Can I lift it from the stove when cooking? No!

Oven glove right at the base of the handle where it's hot and 2nd hand to counterbalance and even then it's so heavy.

What has this got to do with PMR I hear you ask.

Muscles! Where did they go and will I get some strength back as my steroids reduce.

Should I be lifting weights to improve my muscle tone or would that be counter-productive?

Meanwhile, we ready to travel tomorrow and I am appreciating being well enough to be organised and prepared. Journeys over last few years have been exhausting...this time I hope all will be different.

Can't wait to see Thea who isn't well currently. I am sure she'll be bouncing by the time we get there.

Know exactly where you are coming from - I purchased a Le Creuset skillet (in the sale I hastened to add) a few years ago. Still takes 2 hands to lift it nowadays despite being in remission and off Pred.

I now blame arthritis and age!!

I couldn't lift a le creuset before pmr even though I drooled over having a set of them for years. Knowing my luck the kids will probably buy me a pan now just to wind me up!!

How wonderful to read that you are off PRED. You have lifted my heart this morning.

Cheer quietly - might not be off them for ever!

To be honest I’ve always needed two hands for Le Creuset!

Well I’ve just got the smaller casseroles and pans - being on my own - but yes they are heavy without any contents!

Isn't the frying pan a weight? I'm just wondering how I'll be getting on later in the week - I struggled to lift my pan before, now I have to limit what I lift for some weeks because of the pacemaker ...

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply to PMRpro

That means you cant cook! Is OH well enough to take over cooking? If he is make the most of it and just do supervision.

PMRpro profile image

You what? His limit is a boiled egg and chips! Decided advantages to being in hospital given the standard of cuisine here ...

Your husband can boil and egg ! Wow you lucky girl .I Mine can only fry one . Quite pretty though ,frilled round the edges like a doily in a subtle sort of crochet pattern tinged in a delicate shade of brown . Bet yours can't do that ! ;-)

PMRpro profile image

He can only boil one because I have an electric egg boiler!!!!! Now I love my fried eggs like that - but he likes his the soggy white version, same as his toast or bacon ...

Well that’s a relief!🤓

I bought fancy Stainless Steel with Copper Bottoms, you need to be a weight lifter 🏋🏻‍♀️ when they are full!

I got induction so I had to replace pans. My beloved wok ok cos light. I literally went and tried to pick up all the pans in several well known stores. If they had 2 handholds it wasn't bad. In the end I bought the cheapest from tesco for about 20 or 30quid. I can lift them. Had 3 years and still fine. If they break.i will replace with the same. Light as a feather. 🍳

Picking up the pan is weight lifting. Left hand. Right hand 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Until you drop them!

Trouble is, the light pans are aluminum and have teflon linings. Aluminum is supposed to be a health risk, as is teflon. One can't win either way 😂

Either the pmr doesn't let you lift the good pans and the cheaper lighter ones are a darn health risk.

My daughter bought for me a slow cooker. I can't lift it. 😩

These are steel but so cheap. No teflon either.

We have an air fryer which doesnt use oils and the such but I dont have space to havd it out all the time and it needs a team of weight lifters to get it from its storage place to the bench. Surprisingly it doesnt get much use!!

in reply to Yellowbluebell

That's the same issue I have with my ice cream maker. I really want to get my frozen yoghurt going again.

I fancy doing that as well. We are moving next week and kitchen is bigger so might actually get to do more stuff without getting a hernia lifting stuff!

in reply to Yellowbluebell

I had my dining room made into a bigger kitchen. Still don't seem to have the work surfaces. May get rid if the kettle as I don't use it and put the beauty up there. I have a new greek yogurt and some passion fruit and vanilla in so fingers crossed I can do it!!

Yellowbluebell profile image

Sounds yummy. Like you it's the bench space I need. I love baking but with no room it puts me off. New kitchen is three times the size with lots of bench space so fingers crossed I can get my kitchen stuff out again. I want things accessible so I dont gave to get OH to get everything out!

I am the same with my good heavy pans and casserole dishes (le cruset).

Thea will give you bounce and strength. Hope she’s better soon.

That's funny , great minds !

I bought two new sauce pans and a casserole this weekend because I could say I had two but the handles dropped off and the PMR meant that I didn't have the strength to just pick them up from one side with a teatowel anymore ( I know dangerous anyway but I have always considered cooking , like crochet , an extreme sport).

I actually stood with "Grandma ", my youngest daughter testing out wether I could cope with the weight when food was put inside it by getting her to collect together various articles , including a fake potted cactus , toy bunny , box of crayons and an oven glove ( I know not the most appetising recipe) .

I then spent time walking up and down the aisle putting them on and off the shelves , much to the amusement of the shop assistant in TKMaxx.

I think they will be alright but just in case I might work my way up in food types until my muscles are full pan ready.

Perhaps you could do the same with your frying pan . Start empty then after that a fried egg workout. Then two eggs and bacon , get daring as it builds strength and throw in a sausage!!

And the best thing of all about the frying pan workout will be , each time you finish it , you can reward yourself with a sizzling treat !

Just wait to week four , when you get a full fry up!!

Now that might be enough encouragement to start exercising every day , by getting off the mat and into the kitchen , forget the gym suit just add an oven mitt ... The yummy gain , no pain exercise regime. But in this case , if you feel the burn it's probably because you set your teatowel on fire!😋😁😂😂😂

Hugs and bacon sandwiches all round , Bee xx

Bit like me this week. I use a trolley suitcase when I'm at the mall. I find its better than a walking stick. Pockets on the outside for my keys and cash.

So this week I went shopping for a new trolley. I went walkies with them in the shop, but the most important thing was the weight. The lighter the better. I found one thank goodness which weighs 1:3kg

and it has big wheels.

Since I have the pmr I'm not so steady on my legs and it has affected my wrists, hands and arms.

I can most definitely recommend using those little trolleys. Much better than a walking stick as you can pop you shopping inside

BTW neighbours keep asking me if I'm going on holiday. 😂

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply to Blearyeyed

Why does it not surprise me that you actually tried out the weight of pan in the shop. I am surprised that you could actually find what you were looking for in TKMaxx! I usually give up in our local TKMaxx as it's so messy.x

Get lighter pan - ordinary exercise better than weight lifting

I just bought a really small cast iron pan... it is heavy, but I am sick to death of sticking non stick pans... good exercise.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to PinkertonCat

I've used a cast iron pan for years. Properly conditioned it's much better than any "non-stick" surface, no health risks. Weighs a ton, need two hands.

OutdoorsyGal profile image
OutdoorsyGal in reply to HeronNS

And it goes from stovetop to oven with no plastic handles to melt. Pineapple upside down cake, anyone? 😉

Love my cast iron frypans, even if they are too heavy.

Just enjoy the break and rest - you do NOT have to help with household chores so try to leave it to others if you can.

Continue to walk every day to keep those leg muscles working.

As the saying goes "If you don't use them, you'll lose them! This is very true with leg muscles.

Many days I struggle to walk very fsr BUT after I make the effort, it is a bit easier the next time.

Like you, my wrists are suffering and I have problems doing ordinary things but you may just have to ask for help when you need it.

You may be able to find silicone pan handle covers to help with your heavy pans.

I wish you well.

Meantime, ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!!

Ready meals from Sainsbury's delivered to my door. That's the thing.. They are better cooks than I am, and I can try all sorts of variety dishes.. I know someone will come back threatening me with chemically-induced death - but Heyho.. Better maybe that a pred-induced death.

Truthfully, I have a wife who is a super lady and a super cook too.. I only commit these sins when she's away for a break, or busy on something.

PS - We, like someone else on here, bought a set of super-looking Le Creuset stuff. After a brief weight lifting trial, it sat on the shelf for about ten years until we put it in the local jumble sale.. All that glitters is not gold!

No more non-stick for me - stainless steel Meyer pans every time - lightweight, integrated steam holes in lids and clean lovely. The original vitreous enamel for baking trays and large fry/casserole pan that's oven proof - browns lovely every single time - food very tasty.

Enjoy your break and forget about cooking........ concentrate on Big Hugs for Thea!
