Hello everyone. Picture is of Salo on Lake Garda Italy. Cheers me up on this wet and windy day in Cheshire. Going back in the summer.
Down to 9mg pred now and pain is under control so far. Have read a lot about pred and weight gain. My rheumy advised me to go to Slimming World. Not a diet but an eating plan. I'm eating well, never hungry, and have lost 11and a half pounds in three weeks. I am astonished because I find it very difficult to shed the pounds. Loss from now on is likely to be one or two pounds per week.
I just thought I'd share this because it's given me a real lift and I am feeling much better.

Lovely picture and wonderful news. That’s a lot of weight to lose though. Keep an eye on it. Hopefully you are just one of the blessed few with a will of iron. 🌺👏
Hi Jane, I've been lazy, couldn't be bothered to cook just for myself. Living on ready meals and general junk. Now I'm cooking again, doing batches, some fridge, some freezer. Always have something 'on plan' to eat - and enjoying eating again. Thank you rheumy for the nudge!
Thanks for posting I joined SW on line last week! Tomorrow is weigh in but I think I have eaten too much fruit😂. I would love to loose 11.5 pounds so well done to you that is fantastic. Keep us posted as it’s lovely to hear success stories when we are all struggling with this illness!
That is a wonderful start with sw - well done. It is a good plan - It still forms the base of my own healthy eating plan, although nowadays I do have full fat yoghurt and steer clear of anything processed. My weight is up from my target goal but I am not exercising like I was previously to PMR. I'm at 7.5 and going into third week as stiffness is revisiting, I'm in no hurry and waiting for signs of it settling before reducing again. Good luck! Such a positive post, am feeling motivated now plus sun is shining today! Dry dog walk, yay!
I've just come from my 5th Slimming World meeting. My progress has been slower than yours - 9 lbs loss overall - but I'm still pleased. I had in fact started to lose weight from October when I definitely swore off sugar and white carbs and reduced my portion sizes, but the SW programme and the group atmosphere give some context and support to what I'm doing. One thing I try to do is to choose what SW calls 'savvy syns', so those little extras are nutritious rather than just empty calories. I tend to go for a few walnuts or almonds, half a tin of sardines or half an avocado. It's interesting that your rheumy recommended it. I'll have to ask mine what she thinks when I see her at the end of this month.
i understand from people who have known SW for some time that their system has been simplified. It's certainly well explained in their handbook. Having said so, I have to admit that I do go in for a bit of calorie counting as well. Also my basic tenets are no sugar, no white carbs except for the occasional potato, nothing deep-fried and no alcohol - all very compatible with SW.
I started going to slimming world ( yet again - I went several years ago) last March before diagnosis because my GP said my symptoms were just old age 😡 and I knew I was carrying too much weight. Their latest programme is easy to follow and I managed to loose 1 stone 10 pounds from March to October without ever feeling hungry . I was diagnosed with PMR in October and since I've started prednisone it has been a bit harder because I've other things to think about and I've put on 3-4 lbs , but tbh that could be the medical wine which I'm now having more often😉 and since I might be starting on Methotrexate soon I'll have to ditch the medicinal booze . It's the only diet that's worked for me and believe me I've tried them all !! Since I started two of my other friends have joined and have been equally successful. Go for it , everyone !
If you are staying in Verona, check to see if there is an opera in the Roman amphitheatre. Even if you don’t like opera the experience is magical. The audience light candles at the start of the performance at 9pm. You can buy “steps” seats for a few Euros on line. Valerie
Lovely serene picture - could imagine being there. Very well done with the weight loss- it’s the encouragement we need sometimes- do you usually lose weight easily when on diets? That’s an inspiration to many - you must feel great but as SJ says don’t overdo it. My BIL had to diet for health reasons and the weight just fell off _ too much I thought- he gave up carbs. Thank you for sharing - just what we need. 💐
Thanks for that. I usually struggle to lose weight. I've only ever succeeded on a virtually no carb diet but that is, for me at any rate, unsustainable. This Slimming World eating plan has spurred me on to cook healthy food for myself and I'm enjoying cooking for the first time since 2003, the year my husband died and my twin sons went off to University.
I am taking pleasure in eating - and losing weight. Result! 😀🙂
You’ve had a tough year - slimming wouldn’t be top of the list for anyone in those circumstances - so sorry for the loss of your husband. How lovely you have twins , something I would have loved.
I think you’re an inspiration to have pulled yourself together and concentrated on your weight so successfully too - well done you. You’ve put me to shame I only want to lose half a stone and I’m going to do it now! 😊
