I have the same. I don't find bright lights help my sight. I have had 2 injections into my eye and they are working. If that is the treatment go for it as it doesn't hurt as your eye is numbed so much before hand.

Hello Maggie
My husband has had diabetic macular oedema for a few years. It suddenly got very bad a couple of years ago and, since then he's had regular eye injections. Can't predict the future as they haven't been in use for long enough, but they have made a huge difference for the better. (He has scans from time to time to check progress.)
He also had cataracts, and had those removed earlier this year. Wonderful! Now he can drive without glasses!
As PMRpro says, controlling blood sugar levels is key, and cutting carbs will help with that.
