"Wanted" side effects!

Steroid Induced Ocular Hypertension:-

I was told by a consultant at the Eye Hospital to use Lantanoprost eye drops for this condition. He "warned" me that one of side effects was darker longer eye lashes and a possible change of eye colour. I laughed because I thought he was having a joke, he wasn't.

Did I get darker longer eye lashes, nope, I did not.

One of the side effects from a drug I would have l liked and it was denied me; gutted!!:-(

Can I ask

1. do you wear glasses?

2. do you have the start of cataracts?

I have worn reading glasses for years now. I don't have the start of cataracts. Last hospital visit was in Aug 2017 and the eye pressures were normal. No mention of any other problems.

Good, if you had the start of Cataracts and wear glasses then you would need to ask for Re-actolite Rapide lense. Pred and Sun is not a good idea as sometimes (not everybody) can cause those cataracts to grow.

I had a good optician and she changed my specs immediately (I had varilux) and also made me get night driving glasses. I had the start of cataracts and nearly 11 years down the line - they have not grown.

Thanks for the info jinasc, funnily enough I wear sunglasses whenever I go outside, the eye drops tend to make the eye a bit light sensitive.

Life can be odd sometimes, I only learned about pred, sunlight and cataracts last year when an optician whose Mother has PMR came to a support group meeting to give us a talk and told us about the connection.

All these years down the line and still learning.

When I first started taking the preds I read anything I could about the side effects, if I hadn't I could very well have had Glaucoma. I found out later that two of my neighbours have Glaucoma and both had taken steroids for different illnesses.

I think we all crave longer darker eyelashes - I’m so jealous of my grandsons’ - ages 18 & 22 years😠

Wish that had happened to me, but then I loved my 'moonface' as it took away the wrinkles and the 'chicken neck'. I was quite sad when the 'moonface' went.

Mind I was over the moon when GCA went into remission.

Sometimes, just occasionally a side effect makes you 🤔 in a good way😉

Primarose profile image
Primarose in reply to jinasc

How long have you been in remission jinasc?

I didn't even get any joy from the moon face, or as my daughter called me, hamster chops. I had a lop sided mood face, one quite puffy and the other cheek in a different place.:-(

Coming up into 12th year on 1 Jan 2019 if I make it that far 😉😉😉🤔😄

Just when I think I have heard it all.......

in reply to Rose54

I have MORE eyelashes, since the Pred... but in weird places, like in the corners of my eye!!!! I'll see an eyelash there and try wiping it away, until I realise it's actually GROWING out of the corner of my eye! Weird.

He is right one of the side effects is changes in the number of eyelashes, also their length, thickness and even colour. It also can cause browning of the iris.

I take lantanaprost and did get t longer lashes! The y curl in weird ways and some are white, but with mascara makes them look fabulous. One good thing!

I hope my eye color doesn’t change, I like them green.

DAMN! Ain't that always the way!

No my eyelashes are the same length as they were dispute the eye drops ! Typical as u say none of the wanted side effects, just the unwanted. Ok just bring it on 😐

That's it now, I'm going off to sulk again.:-)

I won't get nice thick dark eye lashes, I've been using those eye drops for nearly 17 months. Lucky you.

Margaret1951 profile image
Margaret1951 in reply to Primarose

Wow you should have them by now, question? When you put your drops in, do you by any chance wipe outside of your eyes/ lashes ??? If so that's the reason. I just dab under eyes and leave it like that x

Primarose profile image
Primarose in reply to Margaret1951

Hi Margaret1951, no I don't wipe the excess off at all, it tells you to do that to avoid the "side effects", so of course, as one does....I did the opposite!

Margaret1951 profile image
Margaret1951 in reply to Primarose

Same as me as I always do opposite lol lol I have never had side effects on these. But let you into a secret, I do mine every other night 😱 Don't tell anyone on here 😂😂😂😂😂😂 just get fed up of all this , do this do that (sigh) I have had no remission since having all this 6 years. Got down to 7.5mg then flare ups and back up to 10mg today !! Pain is unbearable today in hips and now got pain in eye etc fed up !

Primarose profile image
Primarose in reply to Margaret1951

Chronic pain is so debilitating I'm sorry that you are going through it right now. You get those "sweet" do-gooders who tell you to focus on something else while in pain, they tell you that that is how to deal with it. They probably have never had so much as a cut finger to deal with. Makes you want to smack them in their self righteous chops.

I've got a little secret as well, we will keep it to ourselves.;-) I forget to do my drops at the weekends.

How naughty are we!!:-)

Actually you do get "side effects" from the eye drops, (you lucky girl), hence your lovely lashes.;-)

Margaret1951 profile image
Margaret1951 in reply to Primarose

I have thick eyebrows also but I never shape them as God did our body, he forgot to take away all my pain though and give me a nice body again and a normal face etc wonder what I did in my life to deserve all this !

Sorry for moaning but feel down today and can't do anything and I am not a lazy woman !

Primarose profile image
Primarose in reply to Margaret1951

You're not moaning, you are telling it as it is. Don't even think about trying to do anything when you feel so awful.

I'm sending my special good vibes to you, sorry I can't do anymore, these diseases are too much to handle sometimes.

Take care

Prims
