Is anyone else taking Vit. B Complex to help combat the effects of taking Omeprazole. I have just read an article that suggested taking it when you are taking PPI's especially if you are over 50.

Interesting Marcimay, can you give us a link to the article. Seeing that my Doc said to me I shouldn't take supliments they don't do any good.
I don't necessarily share his view and take various supliments myself

Hi Pastit,
It was an article in the Daily Mail last Sat, adapted from a book by Dr Lisa Mosconi called Brain Food: How to eat smart and sharpen your mind.
Ok, thanks for the info. I was hoping that it would be more of a research document. I find that sometimes the only thing you can trust in a newspaper is the date. But many thanks I will look into it 😍
Thanks Marcimay, I see that her book is available on Amazon but not on kindle yet.
I expect because PPIs reduce stomach acid they are also affecting the ability of the body to absorb certain nutrients. I read up on omeprazole when I learned how many people are prescribed it and discovered it was not intended for long term use, although it seems doctors prescribe it that way. It is implicated in the development of osteoporosis.
Is it just omeprazole or the whole family of ppis? Please.
I happened to look up omeprazole, but perhaps it's true of the others as well as they work the same way? A pharmacist would know.
Dear Marcimay,
An Interesting question...I have been on omeprazole for some considerable time now, over twenty years actually. It is Prescribed, along with my other Medication, to Calm my Stomach. I have, to say, that it Does seem to work very well indeed. My Blood Results are, very carefully, monitored and the only 'thing' that was lacking, many years ago, was Calcium/Vitamin D- which are Linked. I spent four years on Dialysis, prior to a Kidney Transplant- in July 2013- and, whilst on Dialysis was given a Multivitamin. This was a Specific one however, aimed at Dialysis Patients, to replace Vitamins, that were, 'washed out' during the Dialysis itself. This, along with occasional Iron supplement, again prior to the Transplant, is about 'it'.
I am aware of 'Reported Side Effects', causing a Vitamin/Mineral shortage/shortfall, in some people. We this, in mind, it might be worth Checking if you do actually, have a lack of Vitamins/Minerals. If you don't, then Don't take/top up, what you don't need. At the very least you are wasting money, at worst, you could actually be doing harm....the last 'thing', that you need.
Please don't Overthink, this issue, Marcimay however, if you are still unsure, please DO speak to your own Doctors/Consultants.
Kindest wishes

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your reply.
The only thing they found on my last blood test was a little bit too much Calcium in my blood. This is due to me having Hyperparathyroidism apparently. I have been taken off the Calcium/Vit D tablets and have to have my blood checked every 6 months. If the level gets too high they will have to think of removing the Parathyroid as too much Calcium can cause lots of problems. I am taking Vit K2 to help the bones absorb the excess Calcium. I will have a word with my Dr after my holiday next week and see what he thinks about Vit B Complex.

While you are speaking to him - ask what he knows about hyperparathyroidism and polymyalgia rheumatica.
