Wildfire Smoke!

My Rant for today!

Here in the wonderful part of our world, ( known as the US Pacific NorthWest) , we are heavily shrouded in wildfire smoke. Our beautiful mountains and Salish Sea views are completely lost to murky grey particulate- filled haze.

This experience must be similar to that of others living in areas of heavy environmental smog. My sympathies to all of us.

Ok, back to living with PMR, Jerri

The fires are so sad and destructive!

I've visited your part of the country

and know how beautiful it is. You have my empathy, because I lived in Southern California until last fall and Northern California before that, and have experienced my share of fires.

Stay as well as you can, JoAnne

The whole province of British Columbia is under a smoke warning, children and seniors told to stay indoors as much as possible and everyone not to exert themselves. There are hundreds of fires burning. The smoke has travelled as far East as Western Ontario. And our government is in the process of buying and building as yet unbuilt pipeline because even the company involved had decided to step away 😡 . There have been unprecedented heatwaves in the East, alternating with damaging floods in many areas. And of course California is burning yet again, another terrible summer.

Selfishly, I'm so glad we were in BC 2 years ago and not now.

I absolutely agree with your good fortune. We just returned from 3 week road-trip through the US mid-west, exact areas that are now shrouded in horribly dense smoke. We,too, feel fortunate to have missed the worst of the disaster, coming home when the skies were clear and blue. Not true now!

Enjoy your smoke free environment👏🏽

Heron, you describe our situation precisely. (Belingham Wa, US)

Looking forward to rain!

Even firefighters from Nova Scotia have gone to BC. We've had the same hot weather with long dry spells, but we have had rain - and when the rain has come it's been significant downpours, so, touch wood, no trouble in the forests. Also there was a very early ban on outdoor fires (campgrounds, etc) because the last few years there have been fires very close to the city, and despite some grumbling this seems to have been an effective strategy. Of course we don't have the vast forested wilderness of BC where so many fires are caused by lightning.

There's nothing I can say, the distruction world wide has been dreadful this year. There are no words.

Yuk - I'm glad it keeps raining here which does minimise our fire risk. Hasn't stopped them entirely though. Keep ranting though!

Sorry for this blight Jerri! As long as you are safe though. 💚

Thanks all...the skies are somber and grey ash has fallen on our car. Reminds us of the Mt. St. Helens volcano ash fall in 1980. Errie and unhealthy😱

Someone in the Seattle area reported that being in their smoke is equivalent to smoking 7 cigarettes a day. I hope that isn’t true..... I live near Seattle, in British Columbia, and this smoke is nasty! Each day Our weather website has an air condition rating and lately it’s been at the highest rating they have.....yikes!

Purplecrow profile image

Yep, I live in Bellingham, and the smoke is so dense I can see neither the mountains nor the bay. It seemed to lift a bit this afternoon, but then settled again, like a blanket of stinky grey sludge. All the outdoor workers I saw today , were wearing protective face masks. First time Ive seen that.

Oh thats rotten - just saying there - I will be visiting family soon over there and such a beautiful place - hope it clears soon for you all.

We lived in Kirkland WA for 3 years back in the 80s but luckily never experienced wildfires. All three summers we had we lovely, with fabulous views of Mt Rainier from our house! Hope you will get some rain soon to damp down the fires.

Oh I will be visiting family in Canada soon - and they are badly affected with this "smoke". So sad - such a beautiful place. Hopefully it clears soon.

Hi Purplecrow So sorry to hear of the wild fires near you it must be awful. Here in the UK we did have enough of the heat in the summer, but, now it has started to rain and in England once it remembers how to rain it rains hard. The worry of it is enough to get anybody down. My daughter, her husband and grandchildren live on the Malvern Hills (Elgar, Worcester Sauce etc) and the fire risk was a worry, they did have five acres burnt by some idiot leaving a disposable barbecue on the Hills at the height of the heat - there is always one! Where she lives has only had to be evacuated once during the middle 1980's. As she has a lot of animals we were expecting to have them all here, that would have been real fun she has five dogs, goats, tortoises, chinchillas, chickens etc. Take care of yourself and I send my wishes and thoughts to you. Dear Jerri,

I live in England, the other side, of the, 'Pond' to you. Yes we have had, and continue to have, 'Wild Fires', though, perhaps not quite on your Scale. Do 'They' warn you, if a fire is coming Your way? There was a terrible fire, on one of the Islands (I think) recently- people were running into the SEA, to avoid the flames!

We have rain, and cooler weather, on the way.....Yes RAIN, beautiful 'Wet Stuff', falling from the sky. That Glorious, fire quenching, cooling, plant growing, drinking water making, LIFE giving water! I might just 'Forget' my umbrella, maybe even, hat, coat and boots.....

I hope, and Pray, that the same 'Lovely' Fate befalls, all of, you.

We do get warnings, via media 'alerts', and of course, the telly news folks are all over it.

One of the wonderful things about living in the Pacific NorthWest is that we live among trees. It has never been a worry to me, that our yards and gardens are filled with big conifers, but recently, I have begun to think about how we might respond, should the fires move into our "personal" forests.

I think this is a small worry, given the environmental and social woes of many of our Earth mates... nonetheless...

Kind regards to our world, Jerri

My sympathy for you. I do not live in a beautiful part of the country, do not have glorious scenery from our window, do not have glorious weather (thé il)

Sorry, I hit the wrong button again, (the UK), but at least no smog and very few wildfires, ( too much rain). I have been devastated by the news coming out of the US, and sincerely hope everything will soon be under control. At least the worst we regularly have to endure is pessimistic weather forecasts- too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, snow, (just one snowflake causes a panic) etc, etc, etc. We do have occasional disasters but, relatively few in number and fairly localised.

This all gives me time and energy to laugh at the forecasts here, sympathise deeply with people living and coping with extreme weather, and concentrate on dealing with my own challenges.- CNS VAsculitis.

I can only imagine how it must breathe there. We are seeing the haze and have watering eyes from it in Minnesota! Makes for beautiful sunsets, though, albeit eerie colors. So sorry this has been such a bad year out there. May the rains come, steady and without lightning. In the meantime, thank goodness for AC!

Purplecrow profile image
Purplecrow

You are so right about the spectacular colors from the smoke! Last night, wee hours, the moon was antiqued pumpkin colored. Morning sunrises are neon orange/red, sunsets also. The light of day has the equivalent to an orange photographers filter over all the colors of our world.

So much for visual effects, ...our eyes are red-rimmed, breathing is uncomfortable, and our poor sinuses are suffering.

Good for local drugstores who are sold out of otc remedies😝. Always a silver lining, yes?

I live in North Idaho, where heavy smoke is so regular this time of year that I’ve come to think of it as a fifth season. You might find this website helpful, Jerri. I use it all the time to help me decide whether to go out, plan things, open windows at night, etc. airnow.gov/
