The usual recommendation is to take the entire dose as early in the morning as possible - the new batch of inflammatory substances is shed at about 4.30am, the sooner you take the pred after that the sooner you will feel the benefit. Many people wake early, take their tablets and then settle down for another couple of hours before getting up and by then the pain and stiffness should already be much better.
That is the way to start - sometimes the effect doesn't last a full 24 hours and then some tweaking may be helpful but all at once is the sensible start.
What she said. (“She” ...”who must be obeyed”.) PMR Pro is our ‘go to’’ all wise one. I think you will find her advice most helpful. However, I had trouble with a slow start in the morning with much pain so I split my dose. I take my evening dose at 11:00 11:30 pm and it works well for me. If I’m on an uneven number I take the larger dose in the evening. We are all different. But experiment and you will find what works best for you. I don’t believe all these drugs last 24 hours. I talked my Internist into letting me split my Blood Pressure dose too. Good Luck!
Since I started to split my dosage, 10mg around 5am with yogurt and milk, 10mg after lunch, having a rest or sleep afterwards my wellbeing has increased dramatically, I have some energy to do things and can now get up from a lowish sitting position without hands!! I found taking the preds all at once after breakfast made me feel ill until 3pm.
